If you have worn an N95 face mask before, you will immediately know that it is VERY uncomfortable to wear it for a long time. It's hard to breathe while wearing one and it is very hot and humid. Even with years of experience, I myself cannot keep wearing a mask for more than an hour or two. I cannot resist scratching my face, my nose and my eyes because every part of my face itches so badly... When I used to do experiments, I had to come out of the clean lab every hour or two, so that I could take off my mask to breathe and take off my gloves to scratch my face. Just imagine a little kid or a lay person. How well they can resist scratching and go on their activities when they can't even breathe normally behind an N95 mask... If you wear glasses, your glasses will be all fogged up since your own hot breath will be all directed upward to your glasses. It's very frustrating... then you want to mess with your glasses... Touching your face is one of the biggest risk factors of getting infected... Even for the medical staff during a pandemic, most of them get infected not when they wear their protection, but when they take off their contaminated gears.
You a lot more stoic and disciplined than me. We were given N95 by company to wear during time of SARS a few years ago. After 20 minutes, I took it off. I then wore the surgical mask for cosmetic and political reasons. As did almost all of us in the company.

I think it’s less about discipline and more about getting used to the torture after being tortured for so long...

I went through the same torture of my eyes when I first started doing microscopy. At first, my eyes were all bloodshot and so itchy after about an hour of using a microscope. After 5 years of grad school, I could sit in front of a microscope all day without feeling any discomfort. All about getting used to the torture:cool:;)

You are absolutely right. Unless one has years of experience, it’s almost impossible for anyone to wear an N95 (the only proper mask for protection against viruses) for an extensive amount of time. And wearing a surgical mask will only serve cosmetic and political purposes. So what’s good with wearing a mask?

A tongue-in-cheek reply I seen in another forum for alternative to surgical mask and working as well as surgical mask.
terms used
Fu is Taoist charm typically drawn on yellow paper
kiasu slang for being very fearful

All needed will be a good Fu

To be doubly safe if you kiasu, use 2 fu

And use cowdung to stick the fu to your forehead for lagi even more protection.

I solemnly promise you that the fu will be at least as effective as the surgical mask.

For COVID-19 the fomites were largly from particles with larger dimensions (>10um)

Even cotton mask is enough for above 80% of filtration for this type of particles

N95 is definitly GOOD on this(Filtration rate above 95% of 0.3um sodium chloride particle equivalence)

but surgeical mask with melt-blownnonwoven fabric is enough

More important it perventing you from touching your own nose and face (People touch their faces 1-2000 tims everyday)

This press conference didnt age well, merely a week ago Trump was saying there was a total of 15 cases, 0 deaths, that the 15 would likely soon go down to zero, that its just like the flu, that America was low to no risk, and that hand washing was the most effective way to deal with it.

As yet number In US whom died by Conv 11. Projected dead by the common Flu 10,000. Most Americans go though cold and flu season minus paper masks. Personally I wish more would wear the masks for colds. So few bother to properly cover there Damned mouths when sneezing or coughing. More people should be washing there hands to.

Surgical masks have more utility in preventing the dispersion of the virus from sick people than they have in directly preventing inhalation of the virus. The US CDC did advise all sick people to wear surgical masks. Although the science and logic behind that recommendation is sound, it is completely idiotic and futile as a policy. I don't think most people understand the real reason why everyone in China must wear a masks in public.

We see around the world all kinds of Quackery and charlatans. From people flaking to kiss Shrines for healing an action that is likely spreading the virus more in Iran to Indian cow dung. Do we need to post it here?
