Isnt twitter blocked in China? How are they posting videos to it
I can verify from relatives. Cities in Henan are already doing it. Uncle says even many workplaces are closed in Zhengzhou. We don't know the magnitude tho.
That's a mortality rate of 2.9%, as opposed to SARS with 8,098 cases and 774 deaths, a mortality rate of 9.6%. How is it far worse than SARS? The media is far more incentivized to fearmonger now than during SARS, because China wasn't a competitor to America in 2003. It's slander, innuendo, and spreading FUD to serve a geopolitical agenda, plain and simple.
That's not to say it isn't a serious cause for concern, but it's being blown way out of proportion. Contrast this with something that should be taken seriously but isn't: influenza. Influenza hospitalizes between 140,000 to 810,000, and kills between 12,000 and 61,000 annually.
Where's the hysteria?
To be so called devil advocate and answer rhetorically, I think mostly its combination of some people dont understand why seal off almost 60 million people, 15 plus cities, if it wasnt that bad, plus a lot of commenters on esp western sites say that "add three zeros" to the end of the death number to get a true count etc. Essentially a combination of distrust coupled with the shock and awe factor of unprecedented quarintinee of so many cities etc, they express they feel like its orders of magnitude worse than what they are being told or the current info released. For example infowars alex jones saying the fatality rate is 50 percent and R0 of more than 5.
People do have VPN and there are lots of Chinese users and social media personalities with a presence on Twitter and Youtube as well.
I can imagine it is happening, but in general I think we should avoid posting footage and photos whose attribution to current events cannot be verified by us.
There's already been a few instances when photos or videos initially posted by some people have been falsely attributed (sometimes with malicious intent) to be relevant to this current ongoing event.
its 8000, 1300 is just kids, 8000 is adults as well
1300 dead from the common flu, if this happened in China they would be having a field day. What's even more depressing is that this tragedy was in part made possible by the ignorant and the malicious (anti vaxxers).
