Re: Computer Talk!!

Once you get past Steve Jobs and his Messiah complex, he pulled a number of things on the iPhone and iTunes, which are mistakes, some of which Apple is now doing the 360 degree to turn around.

1. One carrier exclusively.

2. All locked phones, with exceptions changed for France and Hong Kong due to local regulations.

3. No MMS. Being changed in OS 3.0.

4. Bluetooth for headphones only. Also being changed in OS 3.0

5. DRM on iTunes music. Now iTunes is offering DRM free music.

6. No Adobe Flash. Being rectified now.

7. No multitasking. Also being addressed for OS 3.0.

So yeah, Apple eats their words once in a while. They need to keep watching at the competition, including RIM and Palm's own comeback effort.

Yes, I've been noticing Taiwan PC manufacturers offering all sorts of Windows Mobile smartphones and tablets. Acer and Asus for one thing. MSI's Dophone has been sold to HTC however. The problem of Acer and Asus is that both company lacks the kind of product design that HTC exhibits, which can be boldly expressive and innovative. This is not to say I've seen their designs and its not bad, but you get the impression its just another smartphone or PDA, and won't wow you like the HTC Touch or Diamond did.

WiMo also has its problems too. Without a customized shell, this OS is not user friendly for the average Joe or Chen out there. You're only up to going to sell this much---WiMo only accounts for just over 11% of the total Smartphone OS market share compared to nearly 50% by Symbion. About 80% of the WiMo phones are made by HTC.

Well, both Asus and Acer are actually doing it. Asus went into the market I think last year but never caught any attention except maybe as a rebranded ODM. Acer wants to make a splash and is using their own brand name. Problem I see with Acer is that their designs sort of like like HTC's two years ago, as if the inspiration was lifted from the Tytn aka also known as the Sprint Mogul.

Asus wants to do another tablet phone, which basically I mean a rectangular phone built on a large touch screen display ala iPhone. The Asus phones will have WiMo but later on, plan to use to Google's Android.

Asus and Acer probably has the HTC envy. Note that HTC isn't entirely innocent, the so called HTC Advantage is actually something in between a PDA and a netbook.

But there is reason for Asus and Acer to the things they're doing. Note Dell is also planning its smartphones, though HP has been on it for a while (the iPaq has been blown away by the market trends however, even though neat as they are). Smartphones continue to be a growth market, even in the recessionary period, although we expect sales to be cut. Even in this job market, AT&T is hiring people because it needs to finish upgrading its networks. While on the other hand, PC sales are flat and declining, even with traditional notebooks. So companies now seeing smartphones, PDAs, tablet devices (aka Amazon Kindle), and netbooks as the only growth markets this year and maybe next.

Talking about the Amazon Kindle 2, that's an amazing device, it can be a paradigm changer the way the iPhone was.

Huh??? ^^^ I have no clue what you are discussing crobato & kliu0. I guess I'm "technologically" challenged!

All I care about is if I can dial my cell phone and turn on a computer and surf the net. I don't play games, watch many videos or ever listen to music on purpose. I'm old and weird..

No you're quite normal. The industry needs the normal people to remind them once in a while of the basics, otherwise the industry will lose sight of their basic purpose in helping to improve people's lives. Which means common sense usability, straightforwardness and user friendliness.

To put it simply, we are getting into the age of tablet computing. Sooner or later, celphones, PDAs, internet netbooks, ebooks are merged into a singular touchscreen device that looks like those tablets you see in Star Trek DS9. I don't think it needs geeks to use them, they're meant as user transparent devices whose functionality is quite intuitive. You can not only call people, browse or access the web, but also read newspapers and books. We are in the age of technology convergence.

To give you some idea, read about the Amazon Kindle 2. Yes, its from Amazon.com and its an e-book reader that has a built in wireless 3G.

By the way Kliu, I got an HTC Touch Diamond. From the phone, I can access and browse this forum even from a beach or in a public toilet.
