It is a stupid idea to waste electricity, a highly valuable form of energy, by converting it to hydrogen if you can store it with batteries, or pumped hydro instead.

All the processes which convert electricity to hydrogen via electrolysis of water are a boondoggle.

Nobody serious proposes using hydrogen to store energy for grid production. Green hydrogen is a critical chemical feedstock for ammonia, steel production, and synthetic fuels. I'm more skeptical on its use as fuel in FCEVs where batteries are unsuitable, but there's a case to be made there.

Being able to use hydrogen from electrolysis to produce nitrogen fertilizers is crucial to China's national security. Yes, it can get gas to do this from Russia and yes, Russia is a reliable partner, but I'll sleep a little easier if China can do this for itself.

Electricity is not that valuable a form of energy, at least not in China where obscene amounts of solar and wind energy are added to the grid day after day.

Hydrogen itself is an environmental problem. It is needed for many industrial processes and almost all of it is produced using CO2-emitting processes. I would be very happy with green hydrogen for this reason. The problem is though, hydrogen economy is a scam. It is a talking point only because fossil fuel corporations (who BTW produce most of the hydrogen today and are also the biggest consumers) are lobbying in favor of it. It is being pressed into roles it is wholly unsuited for such as heating and vehicle fuel. It is simply not suited for those because of the specific and non-existent infrastructure required and its inherent inefficiency.

Likely course:
