Re: China equiped CH-3 UAV indicates the new tactic of striking aircraft carrier

Strike an aircraft carrier? How so?

:china: 五星红旗, You need to make some sort of statement, in your own words, on how you feel this weapon system will work against an CV.

Does anyone else see this UAV working against CV(N)s? If so how?

I think we need more information.

I don't think two Hellfire sized missiles are going to do much to an aircraft carrier.

Exactly. How is that UAV going to penetrate the USN air cover and AAW? How???

五星红旗 I'm waiting for an answer.

Perhaps he is only talking about using it as a maritime reconnaissance asset, although something that small wouldn't be of much use in the vast Pacific

Hundreds of such attack may disable a CV. The UAV looks very cheap for mass production...

Well, in this world, nothing is impossible.

But using CH-3 to sink a carrier is just a day-dream of some fan boys. Let me tell you why: China is offering CH-3 to ASEAN countries, does those countries has any need to sink any carrier?

However, I'm still curious to ask Popeye a few questions:
1. Like ba12 said "flying a few feet above the wave", is it possible for any flying object to fly at that attitude? According to what I know, what they call "extreme low attitude" refer to aircraft or missile flying at 5 to 10 meters. Is it possible to fly lower than that?

2. If there is anything able to fly at that extreme extreme low attitude, can radars on the carrier battle group detect it? According to an article I read sometime before about the Chinese Navy in the Gulf of Aden, it stated that destroyers can detect the speedboat of the pirate (which is floating on water, even lower than the extreme extreme low attitude) miles away.

Re: New Chinese UAV

achellis heel was her data link, the radio link is highly vunerable to jamming.during the afghan air war, USN EA-6 prowler take special precaution not jam predator UAV data link.
other issue, modern USN CV flight deck are 15 inches thick high quality steel.the same steel use in submarine hull.500 lbs bomb or even 2000 lbs bomb has little effect on super carriers.

On the other hand you don't need to completely penetrate the flight deck to cause enough damage to disrupt flight ops in the area of the blast damage.

If you have an accurate enough altimeter and a cooperative sea state (<3), I don't see why not. Otherwise, no.
