The picture of the armed UCAV is not the Xianglong. It's the Thunderbolt UCAV, which is completely different from the Xianglong.

This could be very useful in monitoring China's territorial claims in the South China Sea and Diaoyu Islands. It can loiter over the region for many hours and provide guidance to Type 022 missile boats.

Promotional video of the Chinese UAV Pterosaur. Not sure where I read this but someone said the HJ-10 produced a visible smoke trail which was bad. From the ground camera view it's looks pretty clean to me.

don't know if you guys seen this recent, but CCTV had a program on Chinese copied version of Harpy. Huitong has a little update on it in his website. I'm sure they have modified it and upgraded the sensors and intelligence of these Chinese Harpy to make it more relevant for PLA.

what is huitong anyways, heard of it so many times.

anyways, I don't think UAVs at this stage is that effective against major powers. It is only effective against powerless countries like Afghanistan and Iraq, which currently doesn't even have air defence. Unless the plane is like the new X-47B, which costs like a trillion to develop. Even the global hawk is vulnerable; no one in the right state of mind would put something of that size into a major power's airspace.
Although I think the technology and foundation for the UAV industry is important for the Chinese, it is not urgent. I think those small hand launched Styrofoam toys are good enough.

It was mentioned in china defense blog:

"Back in 2005, under pressure from the US, IAI returned the Chinese Harpy UAV without performing any upgrades (here). Judging from the recent CCTV report, the PLA seems to have shanzhai-ed the Harpy UAV with its own upgrades."

From Huitong...
It was rumored (March 2011) that 601/SAC is currently working on a long-range stealth UCAV similar to American X-45/47. First flight is expected by 2012.

How difficult is it to develop a UCAV in that class anyway? I mean both SAC and CAC should have the VLO know how and FBW knowledge, and the X-47 isn't much bigger than an F-18... it's basically a remote controlled flying wing with space for a few bombs and most of the autonomous capability of a global hawk or reaper (pre programmed flight path, optics, etc)... nothing out of their league.

I think 2012 is a very realistic date.
