Re: JL-15 and other trainers

The T-38 is based off of the F-5 Freedom fighter of which many were built for export. The US Airfoce adopted a two seat training version, the T-38 in 1961 when the T-38A was initially introduced. They were built through 1972. The latest config is the T-38C which all aircraft are updated to conform to. They have a capability for arming since they also perform armament/combat training, so there are hard points for rocket pods, bomsbs, etc. A replacement program for them called T-X is just getting underway for the T-38s, but all aircraft have recieved life extension programs so the oldest will remain in service at least until 2020, when it is expected that the new trained will begin coming online.
You're too young to remember, Jeff, but the F-5 was based on the T-38.

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

Remember it has secured an export order of 12 to unspecific country..
Will these be delivered to them before PLAAF?

Right now PLAAF does have a high demand for advanced trainers given the number of new 4th gen fighters entering service. I hope Hongdu sets its priorities straight.

I could be wrong but I do not think PLAAF has placed any significant order for the L-15 yet. The 12 orders will help keep the program active while PLAAF continues its evaluation.

Got this photo from somewhere. The chinese says "First experiment on L-15 advance trainer.." The radar in the picture looks like AESA. But I don't know whether its means that radar will use on L-15..

Anybody got more info or full CCTV interview of that clip?

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

By the way, I think after disclosing of the engine development from China Aerospace Propulsion Technology 2013. We seen 2 important development of domestic powerplants for this L-15advance trainer...

With domestic designation, it seems that L-15 is going to be endorsed by PLAAF or PLANAF is a matter of time. The very fact, they are even developing 2 powerplant instead of one shows they placed great growth potential of this advance trainer which no doubt will serve in significant numbers for PLAAF.

I think we can be quite sure, PLANAF also might see L-15 serving in CV-16 Liaoning as a pilot trainer aircraft. Therefore reducing the workload of J-15S and reducing cost as L-15 will be cheaper to burnout compare to J-15S.

We have news of 12 L-15 trainer will be deliver to export customer at the end of this year. I am wondering will we see a fleet of L-15 trainer in PLAAF ensign by the end of this year too?
