Re: JL-15 and other trainers

1. Of course, but BVR is just the first part of air combat, you can't simply dismiss this advantage just saying "the ITR do not count in BVR combat", because this is only half equation.

2. False, the current WVR doctrine is quite explicit: "Shoot-first, kill-first", you can't replace performance with a HMS or an agile missile, therefore, than more advantages you have, more chances to obtain the first shoot.

3. Having an air combat with the droptanks still attached? Are you kidding, right? The CFT also impacts in the F-16 performance, and its only available for the latest F-16 versions (Block 50 and forward), which represents only an small fraction of the F-16s actually in service.

4. Obviously the Rafale is better, but the reason than any other nation can buy brand-new Mirage 2000s is the close of its production line, if Dassault do not close its line after the Greek order, the MMRCA contest in India will have its winner a long time ago, because the initial IAF requirement was MORE Mirage 2000s. Why Dassault close its line? They preferred focus in its best fighter rather than split its resources in two competitive products.

5. And one more thing: No matter how extensive can be the an F-16 upgrade, it can be never close to the Rafale technology (specially the early blocks), but any Mirage 2000 can be upgraded almost at the same standard than the Rafale avionics. And that's a fact sir, not a guess.

I will answer all your parts but let me do numero 5 first.
The Indians indeed upgraded their Mirage 2000 H to a better standard but if you see at the timetable and total costs they could have better gone for Rafale. That is not what I say but that is what we all would say looking at the facts. If you put that much cash in F16 upgrade you get a free block60...

Any (positive) news out there about the new primary trainer?

I hope so, since most recent sino-russian deals went wrong, and the pla could definitely use a more modern aircraft here.

That sure looks like a DSI bump to me

Yes, it certainly does.

And what appears to be front auto-maneuvering slats.... like the J-7E.

There is no sign however of the so-called CFT's - conformal fuel tanks, must have been a trick of the light in the blurry photos, but clearly this model has NO tail hook.

They must do something about that appalling loss of space with the front landing gear - the better to fit a bigger radar.

Its a much sleeker aircraft than the MiG-21/J-7 series.... all do to the nose job.

You can just imagine her as a single-seat fighter with IFR probe.... etc...

Shenyang and Chengdu have fiddled around with experimental FBW systems in older aircraft before, I'm surprised nobody thought it worthwhile to try with the JL-9, it would make the aircraft even lighter and increase fuel capacity.

Its not worth doing that, Bro!

There were African countries like Namibia and Tanzania buying F-7s as late as 2009! There's still a market for the 'ultra low end' fighter. A FBW system would blow this market out of the water. If countries like Ecuador, in 2011 are willing to buy refurbished Atlas Cheetahs and Kenya willing to buy old ex-Saudi Arabian F-5Es than the addition of a simple FBW system would annihilate any competition.

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

people not familiar with aeronautic, assume that any fighter aircraft fitted with FBW will turn some old crunkies into a f-16,nonsense, (responding to several reader) claim Air international (backissue) and aviation week (BI).
