on top of that, there are just more shipyards and available workers in China. Korean shipyards have a real labor shortage. on top of that, if Chinese shipyard can keep forcing Koreans to take losses on those contracts, they will eventually have to stop trying to compete.

Chinese shipbuilders are making inroads in the emerging pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) market, with a leading shipbuilder accounting for 27 percent of global sales, the Shanghai Securities News reported on Tuesday.

State-owned giant China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) obtained nearly 50 percent of all PCTC orders in January, the report said, citing data from UK-based Clarkson Research.

Chinese ship-makers won all the orders in January, including 17 vessels with total deadweight tonnage of 510,000 tons and 152,000 parking spaces.

Since 2021, CSSC has received orders for 35 PCTC vessels with car-carrying capacities of 7,000 to 9,200, with a global market share of 27 percent, the report noted.

In the market for large PCTCs, CSSC leaped from playing catch-up to being a first-ranked runner, according to the report.

PCTCs became a market darling as China's auto exports exploded in 2022 to more than 3.11 million vehicles. Carmakers buy these vessels to beef up their logistics chains and export their cars.

China's shipbuilding sector has seen marked progress in the past two years.

On February 10, the world's largest newly built containership MSC Irina, which can carry 24,346 standard containers, left its dock for a sea trial in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province.

China's first domestically built cruise ship H1508 is nearly 87 percent finished and is expected to be afloat in May, which will be a milestone in China's self-sufficiency drive, according to the South China Morning Post.

Insiders said the progress made in such specialized and advanced ships is of special importance to China in the process of industrial upgrading and scaling up the global industrial and supply chain.

Building and fitting out such ships requires top-tier products from a wide range of categories, driving the upgrading of those sectors as well.

"The lead in PCTC reflected a strong recovery trend in the Chinese shipbuilding industry in the post-virus world," Wu Minghua, a veteran Chinese shipping analyst, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

With the total orders, deliveries and type of vessels far exceeding its competitors, the Chinese shipbuilding industry has demonstrated its evolving adaptability and ability to absorb new technologies - the most important feature in the past decade and the main reason for foreign orders, Wu said.

Shanghai striving to develop cruise cluster​

A detailed development plan and a set of 20 supportive policies were released on Wednesday to facilitate the expansion of the sea cruise industry in Shanghai's Waigaoqiao area amid the city's efforts to advance high-quality development of the manufacturing sector.

By 2025, a world-class comprehensive cruise production and assembly base should be initially shaped in Waigaoqiao in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, said the industry development plan. The base should be able to explore the cruise market all over China and even across the Asia-Pacific region so it can forge a globally influential cruise industry cluster, the plan stated.

Waigaoqiao should feature a globally significant cruise industry cluster with an accompanying complete supportive system, high-end manufacturing and various consumption resources by 2035, it said.

A total of 20 policies were released on Wednesday to achieve the above goals. Qualified high-tech cruise companies or research institutions will be granted between 250,000 yuan ($36,520) and 5 million yuan in one-time subsidies by the local government. A maximum 20 million yuan in bonuses will be provided to qualified cruise technology renovation projects upon completion. Equipment subsidies and tax exemptions from technology transfers are included in the newly released policies.

Li Hui, head of the Pudong Technology and Economic Committee, said that the plan and supportive policies are aimed at building an advanced cruise manufacturing industry in Waigaoqiao, which combines production, assembly, maintenance, design and research.

A total of 20 cruise projects were launched in Waigaoqiao via a signing ceremony on Wednesday, covering manufacturing, interior design, production and other segments throughout the cruise industry chain. Shanghai-based marine service provider RMS Group, Changzhou-based manufacturing conglomerate KTK Holding and Japan's Endo Lighting Corp signed cooperation agreements on Wednesday.

Huang Fuyu, CEO of RMS Group, said updating existing marine service standards by referring to internationally accepted ones is one way to facilitate high-quality development of the cruise industry — not only in Shanghai but nationwide.

Wang Yanguo, vice-general manager of CSSC Cruise Technology Development Co Ltd, explained that about 80 percent of the cruise production sector in Europe has been localized. The complete cruise supply chain in Europe, which integrates talent training, technology innovation and production, has helped to realize the high rate of localization. This can be an important example for Waigaoqiao to emulate, Wang said.

The first China-made large cruise ship, which is designed and manufactured by China State Shipbuilding Corp Ltd, is scheduled to begin trial sailings from Pudong in July.

While high-end manufacturing has been an important driver of high-quality economic growth in Pudong, the cruise industry should become a key growth engine for the overall manufacturing industry in Pudong by creating a complete industrial chain featuring technological breakthroughs and state-of-the-art management systems, said Hang Yingwei, government head of Pudong New Area. In this way, traditional industries can also be upgraded and complete their restructuring, he said.

According to the Ministry of Transport, about 14 million Chinese vacationers will take cruise trips annually by 2035. This will drive more than 1 trillion yuan in investment, including the construction of at least 100 cruise ships. The annual cruise industry value will exceed 400 billion yuan by that time, creating more than 1.5 million jobs.

That's huge. Global passenger numbers in recent years is around 30 million incl China

I hope we'll see more large Chinese cruise companies. The largest technically Chinese one in Hong Kong (Genting Cruises) just went bankrupt last October. Even it was small compared to the American and European ones.

Probably the world's largest containership until another comes along that's a little bit bigger which I won't be surprised coming from the same yard. This title is being fought over small numbers above 24,000 teu. Note that ships cannot go over 400 meters in length or they won't fit ports. So the draught gets deeper and this forces ports to modernize by dredging so they can be deeper.

Chinese Shipyard Wins for 10 LNG dual-fuel boxships from MSC​

Chinese manufacturer China International Marine Containers (CIMC) recently confirmed a new order from international shipping line Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for ten 11,500 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container ships, according to China-based news agencies on Friday (17 February).
According to CIMC, Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, in which CIMC Leasing (Xinde) Co., Ltd is a shareholder, will build the container ships.
The boxships are expected to be delivered by 2026. The series of container ships will be developed and designed by Offshore Engineering Design & Research Institute of CIMC (ORIC) (CIMC ORIC).
The ships will each have a total length of 335 metres, width of 45.6 metres, depth of 25 metres, a design draft of 12.5 metres, and a design speed of 20 knots.
Each will be equipped with the largest C-type LNG fuel storage tank of its class. The ships will be capable of running on both LNG and traditional fuel to complete a single round trip from China to Europe or China to the US.
Compared with the existing ships of the same type, the series of container ships can save about 5% of fuel. The 10 ships will be classified by classification societies DNV, Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Bureau Veritas (BV).
According to Yin Xunbin, general manager of CIMC ORIC, the ships will not only adopt dual power propulsion capabilities of using LNG and traditional fuel oil, but also be ammonia-ready.
