I never said anything about the Japanese and the Wassenaar Arrangement. I said China was blocked by the Wassenaar Arrangement.None of that has anything to do with the Wassenaar Arrangement.

U.S. export curbs on China won't extend to legacy chips: official
While the U.S. has ramped up restrictions on cutting-edge chip exports to China, it has "no interest in expanding them further to mature chips or legacy chips," the U.S. assistant secretary of commerce for export administration told Nikkei.
A smartphone released by China's Huawei Technologies last August was equipped with a cutting-edge 7-nm semiconductor, which exceeds U.S. restrictions. This is seen as a likely case of U.S. technology leaking through regulatory loopholes.
While qualifying that she would "defer to the technical experts" on China's current cutting-edge chip capabilities, Kendler said "just because you announced that you have a 7-nanometer chip does not mean you have [the capability to produce] a 7-nanometer chip, or that you can manufacture at scale or at any yields that are significant."
but it will take decades. and what about qualified workforce ? Japan used to be the powerhouse in semiconductor manufacturing in 1980's. and we are now in 2024. they have lost it.. so i have serious doubt. also TSMC will not let Japan to snatch their position easily. This is possible since the US wants the semi industry to move out of Taiwan. And the US economic environment is just not conducive for the business. Japan is much better a place to operate in.
Did either Huawei or SMIC even announce anything about making a 7nm chip? I thought all Huawei did was just start selling phones equipped with 7nm chips in massive quantities but never made any announcements about where the chips came from. While qualifying that she would "defer to the technical experts" on China's current cutting-edge chip capabilities, Kendler said "just because you announced that you have a 7-nanometer chip does not mean you have [the capability to produce] a 7-nanometer chip, or that you can manufacture at scale or at any yields that are significant."
come on bro. it was indeed SMIC 7nm process confirmed by many source and news outlet.. SMIC also started to charge premium prices from Huawei for 7nm process .. this year SMIC is all set to become second largest pure fab in the world. thanks to sanctions and new customers.Did either Huawei or SMIC even announce anything about making a 7nm chip?
