CXMT reached LPDDR5 and now is going for HBM, so of course they will end up in entity list. The real news is that they are not already there.

Here some background info:

So CXMT is actively expanding capacity and it seems using also US tools (like AMAT), of course they will be stopped from getting US tools, what is surprising to me is that CXMT decided to use US tools for their new capacity. There is a huge risk they just pay for them and the tools do not arrive, or maybe they arrive but servicing/spare parts are blocked shortly thereafter. So CXMT plan is not clear to me: they are building their new home on quicksand.

Eventually adding CXMT to entity list will clarify the things and force CXMT to do the right thing, i.e. buy from Chinese suppliers.

Currently CXMT supplies DRAM for Xiaomi and Transsion smartphones, in the future they will probably supply also Huawei (as it seems inevitable if HW cannot buy SK DRAM anymore) so we end up with a Chinese DRAM manufacturer that supplies Huawei and still buys US tools! This is absurd even for US standards. Again, the decision of CXMT to buy US stuff is baffling to me, does not seem future proof at all.

There are three ways to deal with upcoming bans:

1) buy from other sources,

2) buy as much as possible from original before the ban takes effect,

3) do both of the above

They bought as much as possible for capacity and spares before the actual ban.

respectfully disagreed..

of course CXMT will stock pile enough tools before ban takes effect but CXMT wanted to play dual strategy. get US tools as well as working closely with domestic equipment makers.. but if US put CXMT into entity list then they have no choice but to work with NAURA and AMEC. both Chinese companies have DRAM tools..

local government investing 6.5 Billion dollars in CXMT. last year plan was reveled. without back up plan they won't do this.. $6.5 Billion is a lot money in mainland.

we have discuss this before ..

Local government investing whopping $6.5 Billion in CXMT. without any backup plan they won't invest such a huge amount. 6.5 Billion dollars is a lot money in mainland. CXMT closely working with local suppliers as well.

Yes, thanks for pointing out this huge investment. I agree Chinese government do not invest such a big amount of money for CXMT to just spend on US stuff.

Connecting the dots, in my mind this makes CXMT supplying Huawei in the future going from probable to very probable. Not only on smartphones, but here AI is the real strategic target (also for Chinese government): expect some HBM samples from CXMT already in 2024.

What do you mean by backup plan? Their plan is clear that they will be using local equipment.

CXMT exempted from US sanctions for mature nodes tools.. but i guess that too will end soon and CXMT will put in entity list soon. but last year local government announced to invest 6.5 Billion dollars.

CXMT was planning for dual strategy. getting USA tools + working closely with local tools makers as well but they don't have any choice.. so the only option available is to work with NAURA/AMEC..

Yes, they went with option 3 and did both -- stockpiled foreign equipment before ban and used local vendors going forward.

CXMT had known it would in the cross hairs for years. Micron has been attacking Chinese mem fabricators ever since China began building capacity in the sector. They patent-trolled Jin Hua in 2017 and CXMT itself in 2020.

No one in its front office would think it can proceed with continued access to American after Huawei and ZTE.

But the best way to deal with an upcoming ban is not to stop purchasing even before the ban takes effect but to stockpile before the effect and use that as a cushion while transitioning to other vendors.

Tongfu has developed the ability for 3D DRAM advanced packaging to make HBM. It's also working with CXMT to develop and mass produce HBM

Looks like CXMT is testing NIL for their process. The hard mask is used to protect the wafer other structures in the etching process.

photoresists have a short shelf life, not sure how they are going to stockpile consumables. nikkei broke the news, also Wang Yi says U.S. sanctions on China have reached 'bewildering absurdity', it seems to me China got the diplomatic heads up about the incoming blockages.

Again, there are 2 fabs. The new fab will use tools agreed to since October sanctions. The existing fab continue development path. That will rely on equipment purchased before the sanctions came into place and new domestic tools getting qualified.

The idea is that the new fab can produce older memory chips at higher yield, since they are more mature. I think servicing and spare parts are issues they can manage. We've seen Chinese semi industry being able to service these tools.

If we get entity list now, then their new fab just can't expand until domestic tools are ready.
