1. TSMC is profiteering with these shenanigans, and that is bad!

2. Then again, the companies that tend to have stock piles of chips accumulated from lower prices are Chinese, while the companies that tend to have shortages and need chips are American. Maybe that is good! :p

3. Life and chips are really complicated bother ansy1968.

SMIC has been banned! Those American companies cannot buy from them, because SMIC has been banned!

So American companies have to buy from TSMC at inflated prices! They inflate the prices to lower R&D cost so Apple Inc and Steve Jobs ghost can get free rider privileges. Everyone else is a sucka! President Trump would be so proud!

Chinese companies, since Chinese people are cheap, will try to buy from SMIC, because the politburo told those guys the compatriots from Taiwan at SMIC which is China's best fab to hurry up and serve the people!

A sure omen that President Trump will come back, like a suckas!

:D
@horse Thanks bro I'm a little bit harsh on TSMC but you're right as always regarding SMIC and the Chinese ;) , by trading away their 5nm tech they had to recoup their investment and the American are a willing participant and true to their words this time around...LOL.

A recent German report states that competitive pressure from China is increasing. Chinese companies are marketing more and higher-quality products in Europe. The EU is struggling to formulate a proper response. Bits&Chips asked China expert Sanne van der Lugt to put things in order.
"
The agendas of the US and Europe do not necessarily align. We’re not automatically partners.
...
That means we shouldn’t blindly follow America’s agenda. “We mustn’t be naive. We seem to have the same interests. But the idea of China as an existential threat, that’s particularly true for the US. There’s a possibility that the US could be knocked off its throne by China. For Europe, that’s much less of an issue. We don’t have that leading position in the world and whether you’re the third market after the US or China won’t make a whole lot of difference to our power position.”
...
In an opinion piece in the Clingendael Spectator, Van der Lugt finds this to be hypocritical. “I fully support the request for the immediate release of Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor, who are victims of a political power game,” she writes. “What I’m missing, however, is a second letter sent to the Canadian and US governments with a similar request for the immediate release of Ms. Meng, since she too is a victim of this political power game.”

She makes some valid points and this is a very sensible analysis.

She maintains an equidistant approach to both US and China, without all the bashing.

I respect her.

The future for Europe is tourism. They better start preparing by toning down their racism.

Van der Lugt: "There’s a kind of arrogance behind it: we’ll keep innovating, they won’t catch up with us, the Chinese aren’t innovative. I’ve heard this a lot.”

Van der Lugt: We might have to introduce regulations, for example. Otherwise, our markets will be flooded by foreign brands that European companies can no longer compete against. “For a very long time, we’ve promoted liberal market forces all over the world. Such a policy works well when your national companies can compete with the biggest companies in the world. But as soon as you fall behind, you don’t want to open your market to foreign companies at all.”

This racist trope towards Asians is actually a competitive advantage for China. It has allowed counterproductive policies, like the semiconductor sanctions, to give China the market motivation to move up the technology food chain. When has sanctions of any kind ever held back the PRC? Sooner or later, China recreates the sanctioned item and to top it off, it's usually relatively soon. We should keep this in mind and remember the big picture. Whether ZTE, Huawei, SMIC or any other prominent target is harmed or even destroyed, the end result will still be the same. It's just how much pain will be suffered before China finally triumphs.

What a breathe of fresh air when intelligent, relatively apolitical, nuanced analysts like Van der Lugt speak their voices of reason in a sea of stupidity in the West.

Nice article its kind of refreshing to read a western China article that can actually stay a bit neutral and not be fire and brimstone.

Yeah sadly I have to agree, it will probably be Hotel Europe for rich Americans and Asians.

Bloomberg article about china chip industry. Its almost all behind a paywall, so i cant read it, but it seems that its about china investing bilions of dolars in old chip technology.
