Can someone more knowledgeable explain to me what it means ?
At first I thought it means that it will no longer be tradable in HKEX.
But the wording in the article "removed from the SSE SH Equities Index starting Aug 16" suggests to me it will be removed from Shanghai instead.
Does that mean SMIC will only be tradable in Hongkong ?
Why ?

It doesn't make sense to me.

I did not read the article.

If they say "remove from an index," all that means is a particular stock is no long part of the index. Such as if they remove GM or BA from the Dow Jones Industrial 30 stock index.

If we see the word "delisted," for the stock exchange, then that means the stock will not trade any further on that exchange.

"SHANGHAI- The Shanghai Stock Exchange said on Thursday it will remove Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) from an index composed of eligible Shanghai stocks under the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect"

An index, a list of stocks on the stock exchange in Shanghai, which are allowed to be in connection with HK

Only people in China can buy SMIC (?)

0981.HK - Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation

I give up, I don't get it

This is one where China has to go it alone; nobody has the expertise to help. The answer is to further educate and develop China because once China is a developed nation, it will naturally be like 4 USAs working togther, maybe more due to greater STEM major per capita in China than the US.
Why can Japan and China not be allies?

"SHA: 688981" is SMIC in Shanghai

"0981.HK" is SMIC in HK

"Shanghai Stock Exchange and China Securities Index Co., Ltd. decided to transfer

out of the Shanghai Stock connect index sample from August 16. This adjustment is to maintain the consistency between the target of Shanghai Stock connect and the sample of Shanghai Stock connect index“ At present, there are no relevant fund products based on the Shanghai Stock connect index. This optimization adjustment will not affect any normal investment transactions. " Insiders interpreted."

!?

?

I honestly don't understand it

It's possible in the future, but it is not relevent to China's current plans. Japan has a requirement that you beat the shit out of them to be their ally LOL I jest. But in all seriousness, for that to happen, China would first need to displace the US as the most powerful nation in the world and make it umistakably clear that Chinese will is supreme in Asia. To get there, China would have to first win the tech war and clear every technological hurdle in lithography by itself. By then, if you wanna bring Japan in and let them have a piece of that, it's pretty much giving things out for free.

Hi friends, I have been lurking a long time and never post.
However as an overseas Chinese, I invested in SMIC in the HKEX to support the Chinese semiconductor industry.

Now I found out that SMIC will be removed from the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect.

On the other hand, if it will be removed from HKEX instead, doesn't that mean I have to sell it before 16 ?
I can't find more information on this because my Chinese is quite poor
As @horse explained above, it is simply an index. It is a *number* which is computed daily or more frequently through some formula based on the value of a certain set of stocks. It is used, like DJI or any other index to get an idea how the market overall, or some part if it, is doing. SMIC is being removed from from that set. Maybe it's not representative? Maybe it's going up too fast? They don't explain. It doesn't mean anything else.

In some cases financial houses will create a mutual fund which tracks an index, and if you buy shares in that mutual fund you benefit from the rise of stocks represented by that index. In this case, it will make a difference, but it doesn't sound like such a fund exists to begin with.

"We must resolutely support basic research. Researchers need to fully devote themselves to their research, and do well in basic research in the same spirit as a blacksmith in the past who would spend years forging a perfect sword. This is of vital and long-term significance in boosting China's strength in science and technology," Li said.

Lead scientists will be given the discretion to decide what to study, how to build teams and how to use funds in line with the priorities and scope of the country's agenda. A "budget plus negative list" management model will be implemented in new research and development institutes.
