Sanity has returned to Taiwan, at least temporarily. TSMC last week announced that most of its valuable chips will still be produced on the island. This is despite intense pressure from the Joe Biden White House to “friendshore” TSMC’s most advanced chipmaking capacities, including those for the next-generation chips, to the United States.

While President Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party have effectively capitulated to the US demands, the island’s public and its business elite have realised giving up the jewel in their manufacturing crown is a bridge too far.

They have belatedly realised the Faustian bargain the Tsai government has made for them by going over completely to the American side. Hopefully, they will translate that realisation in the coming election next year.

The Dutch government is working on legislation that will be used to bar Chinese students from university programs on sensitive technologies including semiconductors and defense, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

wowww, finally SSD is cheaper than HDD

The specs for 4TB is great, with 8000 TBW, it means 2000 cycles .. actually great specs. Samsung 980 pro only has 600 cycles

The question is how come this baby can have over 3x more cycles than Samsung SSD high-end ?

So, YMTC now can produce 232 layers? all with domestic tools ?

In this study, the researchers extensively investigated the TPP of HAVE hydrogel photoresists, and achieved the 22 nm feature size. The photoresist formulation was optimized and the biocompatibility of 3D hydrogel cell scaffolds was explored. The influence of the focus position on the laser threshold was also comprehensively investigated.
Furthermore, the biocompatible 3D hydrogel scaffold structures were fabricated. The protocol proposed in this study is promising for fabricating complex biocompatible 3D hydrogel structures and exploring the potential applications in microenvironment regulation, tissue engineering, biomedicine, and biomimetic science.
This study was supported by the National Key R&D Program, the Natural Science Foundation of China, and the International Partnership Program of CAS.

They released the Aquila model. FlagOpen open source project by BAAI is a large part of that

That would reduce development time. I noticed A100 and Tianshu GPU to be the only GPUs used for Aquila model based on github. So, it would make sense for them to do this given the lack of need to use something other than Cuda. imo, it's a problem BAAI is using Cuda this much, but whatever

Looks like Tianshu GPU also integrated on Baidu PaddlePaddle

they are also certified with CEC cloud, part of the China mobile ecosystem & I think used in the new China Telecom data center in Lingang. So a lot of the GPU makers we saw last year are making their way to various cloud providers and data centers, but this is still early.

Aside from that, Biren showcased their product at the conference. Keep in mind that they are part of the FlagOpen project

在三方的共同努力下,在基于天垓100加速卡的算力集群上,100B Tokens编程语料、70亿参数量的AquilaCode大模型参数优化工作结果显示,1个Epoch后loss下降到0.8,训练速度达到87K Tokens/s,线性加速比高达95%以上。与国际主流的A100加速卡集群相比,天垓100加速卡集群的收敛效果、训练速度、线性加速比相当,稳定性更优。在HumanEval基准数据集上,以Pass@1作为评估指标,自主算力集群训练出来的模型测试结果达到相近参数级别大模型的SOAT水平,在AI编程能力与国际主流GPU产品训练结果相近。
basically from what I can tell, performance similar but has better stability. it's able to do 7B parameters here, but 10B+ parameters should be no problem. 19 days of training, that sounds quite a bit
