What type of applications will be using 2nm, when the costs will be super high?
Consumer gaming and prosumer products think Macbooks, Iphone, Highend phones, console, cpu and gpu.
Prosumer products like Macbooks an extra $99 if the performance gain is there might actually be worth it for me.
Building code/docker containers tens of seconds faster might be worth way way more over a period of 2~3 years.

a $3,000 Iphone 18. :p
Yeah people will probably have to use their older phone 2~3 years extra.

Chinese government had warned private companies to invest and buy local products, in 2014 SMIC was only 2 generation behind TSMC latest process and not like after ban when it was more than 4 generation behind them. Problem was Chinese companies not giving order to SMIC and even SMIC not investing much in SMEE equipment because SMIC had low revenue .
Chinese companies before ban used to think that local products are of bad quality so why buy from them just buy chip from TSMC because buying chips are cheaper , just even look at how much Huawei was ordering chips from TSMC before it's getting banned and when whole business destroyed then only Chinese companies started waking up and last hammer came when now Biden has tighten more restrictions on whole semiconductor industry. Capatalist companies care nothing about anything except making quick buck & whole other issue regarding mismanagement of $100 billion of fund since 'Big Fund' was created is another story.
That's why the state must take responsibility and establish pilot projects and pilot facilities that demonstrate that high quality products can be made... The fabs are already very comfortable importing foreign made equipment that dominate the marketand getting them to switch over to domestic products of the same quality that have very little to no market, even if those products are offered at lower prices is difficult.

The fabs will likely not change their policy of foreign purchases, without either explicit local content requirement laws that mandate import substitution when domestic suppliers are available, or when foreign suppliers stop supplying them equipment or are very likely to stop doing so - which Trump demonstrated and the Biden Administration has followed through with...

Interesting because N+1 is the equipment strategy of Wanye Enterprise, Is interesting too that Jiaxin was founded by an ex SMIC CEO.

I think there is a bit of confusion here.

Wanye Enterprise owns many companies. In particularly they own Kingstone Technology and Jiaxin Semiconductor.

Kingston manufacturs mainly ion implanters for photovoltaic applications and just very recently delivered the first machine for semiconductors, but definitely not for advanced nodes.

Jiaxin Semiconductor business is used equipment reconditioning.

When they say 1+N they refer (as is stated in the above article) to 1 Kingston (Ion Implanter) + N Jiaxin (many reconditioned tools).

It is important to note that only Kingston actually manufactures new machines, Jiaxin just reconditions used, foreign machines.

Anyhow all of this has nothing to do with SMIC's N+1 node.

But overall, memory products are not that important to national security.

Memorys are strategic sector. Just like flat panel display and oil has been defined as strategic industry by Chinese gov,any commodities that China needs to consume a large volume each year is strategic. Moreover a large chunk of Chinese annual chip imports compose of memorys, boost domestic memory production is the quickest way to meet the 75% domestic chip target

Wanye Enterprise's strategy is 1+N,not N+1. And it has nothing to do SMIC's 1+N either

"1" refers to Kaishitong ion implanter equipment, "N" refers to multiple types of front-end equipment covered by Jiaxin Semiconductor
