I think overall saying that SMIC beat Intel for 7nm is a bit an overstatement. We know that Intel 10nm was similar to TSMC 7 nm. Intel will be producing also soon smaller nodes, I guess that if SMIC wasn't handicapped with the exclusion of EUV today, then it would come at similar level to Intel these days.
In foundry SMIC is ahead of Intel.

Bro, Japan has plan for a 2nm RD fab to be ready by 2025. This plan is already in progress.

And Japan's semiconductor capability is in fact better than SMIC's. Micron Japan (formerly Elpida) is making DRAM D1a/D1b node with overall capacity >100K wpm. Even though comparing logic and DRAM is like comparing apples & oranges, considering the minimum feature size and the patterning complexity, D1a/D1b are considered to be about equivalent to 5nm logic.

The capability to fab chips at this level of dimension, control the defect density to enable high volume production of 100K wpm would put them ahead of SMIC.

Whether Japan has a 7nm logic/foundry fab is a business decision that, like you said, involves consideration of market demand, competitiveness, etc. But don't let this confuse this to mean Japan is inferior in technical capability.

With the global geopolitical tension looming, if and when motivated, Japan will easily surpass China. This is especially true when we face restrictions while they don't. I had previously voiced my concern about the gap growing bigger vs. the world. Until domestic immersion and EUV scanner is available on a massive scale, I still believe my concerns are likely to happen.
You are literally pulling things out of your ass.

Japan is ahead in DRAM and NAND. China is ahead in logic. Otherwise where is Japan's competitor to SMIC?

'Easily surpass'. Based on what? Intel has barely surpassed SMIC even in the face of all of its advantages vs SMIC's disadvantages.

Anyway, I am not going to waste anymore effort replying to Jai Banzais. This is my last post on the matter.

Lol, so Japan can easily go and fab 5 nm (since surpassing China means that) despite all of their companies working at 40 nm+ for years, never ever touching advanced nodes? If so, then why are Japanese companies ignoring the most profitable part of the chip market? Are they dumb?

Yeah, sounds like bullshit unless they can snatch all of Samsung/TSMC engineers. If catching up in FinFET/GAAFET nodes was easy, Intel would already be mass producing them but they can't and Intel has far more experience in advanced nodes than any Japanese foundry.

In the evening of August 7th, Shengmei Shanghai released its 2022 semi-annual report. From January to June 2022, the company achieved operating income of 1.096 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 75.21%, and the net profit attributable to shareholders of the listed company was 237 million. Yuan, an increase of 163.83% year-on-year, and earnings per share of 0.5500 yuan.

Shengmei Shanghai said that this is mainly due to the global semiconductor industry boom and the strong market demand for the company's semiconductor equipment. The company's sales orders and production capacity have continued to grow, and operating income has further increased; Growth has diversified the revenue structure and expanded the market size. From January to June 2022, Shengmei Shanghai's operating income of semiconductor cleaning equipment, front-end semiconductor electroplating equipment and advanced packaging wet-process equipment (including back-end electroplating equipment) have increased significantly.

The main products of Shengmei Shanghai include semiconductor cleaning equipment, semiconductor electroplating equipment, vertical furnace tube equipment and advanced packaging wet equipment. Continuous innovation in performance, production capacity, improving customer product yield and reducing customer costs. At present, through differentiated innovation and competition, it has successfully developed the world's first SAPS/TEBO megasonic cleaning technology and single-chip tank combined cleaning technology. At present, the company's semiconductor cleaning equipment is mainly used in the cleaning process in the field of 12-inch wafer manufacturing, and there is no competitive gap with similar products from international giant companies in terms of the applicable size of semiconductor cleaning equipment.

Shengmei Shanghai expects that, benefiting from the mainland's policy support for the integrated circuit industry and the increase in local demand, the company's main customers will still be in the stage of continuous production expansion in the next few years, which will be able to drive semiconductor manufacturing equipment including cleaning equipment and copper plating equipment. Demand maintained steady growth.

On the same day, Shengmei Shanghai also announced that it plans to invest in the construction of high-end semiconductor equipment expansion research and development projects. The new project name is the high-end semiconductor equipment expansion research and development project. According to the disclosure, the investment amount and source of funds: the total planned investment of the project is 748 million yuan, of which the site investment is 468 million yuan, the purchase and installation cost of research and development equipment is 20.703 million yuan, and the research and development cost is 260 million yuan. Among the investment funds of the project, Shengmei Shanghai used its own funds to invest 16.8591 million yuan, and the remaining 730 million yuan is planned to be invested in the construction with the super-raised funds from the company's initial listing.

"This project will expand the research and development of high-end semiconductor equipment on the basis of the company's original products, technologies and customer resources, create a multi-product matrix, consolidate the company's market position, and enhance profitability." Shengmei Shanghai disclosed that the products to be developed in this project include: The products in the expansion field of dry process equipment and supercritical CO2 cleaning and drying equipment have high standards, and some performance indicators are expected to reach the international leading level. The company's strong technical reserves can effectively reduce the difficulty of project research and development and ensure the smooth implementation of the project.

If Japan can easily build fab at 5nm or 7nm, they wouldn't need to invite TSMC to build 20nm fab in Japan and was willing to chip in half of the cost (TSMC turned down the invitation and offer btw).

The assertion is quite similar to the perennial urban legend that Japan can develop nuclear weapons in six months should it decide to do so.

Every Chinese semiconductor-related company worth its salt is growing 2x annually.
By 2023/24 most (if not all) of those companies should have sufficient operating income and profit to leverage in order to drastically increase their R&D and growth projects.

So, the best for IC developments have still not arrived. When you see companies with >$1bn annual sales that's when the real fun begins

Man this thread went the way of a "jai hind" forum real quick.

It's important to be realistic and not overestimate ones abilities while underestimate ones adversary. That is the West's mistake in regards to china and they continue to make that mistake. I hope it continues even more.

I'm here to see real progress in anything that affects Chinese semi conductor industry so I do think what Japan can do is important if it affects us Chinese.

I can only speak for myself and I'm not here just for feel good news, I am looking for objective news and data. So those who are arguing please don't degrade this thread. Do it in a separate thread please.
