It's too late for US to pressure Dutch stop shipping DUV immersion to China. Up to now, China already received close 80 DUV immersion systems and more coming in. Dutch so far refused to comply with US's demand.
US can't stop China in the main battle ground of EV.

Each EV can have up to few hundred ICs. Alot of power IC, MEMS, CMOS sensors, MCUs.

THe most expensive chip in this car is the general purpose DSP(digital signal processor) , 200 Yuan.
All the chips in this car doesn't even need 28nm immersion DUV , 55nm/45nm dry DUV is enough.


THis is CHina's main battle ground.

THis is what made US so nervous about. China has made alot of higher node power electronics and logic, sensors for Electric car.
Each EV can have up to few hundred ICs. Alot of power IC, MEMS, CMOS sensors, MCUs.

A figure of 3000+ semiconductors in a car has been mentioned.

Don’t you mean the Dutch? ASML hasn’t been the one looking to ban their own exports to China as far as I am aware.
@FriedButter Yeah BUT Mark Rutte is a CIA man and with the Farmers protest , I hope he will think rationally and decide for his country future and not of the US or else I'm not Dutch BUT I see him the next to be guillotine.

The bubble chart below should provide clues to why despite big YoY growth, the domestic fabs' foundry marketshare doesn't change much in the pie charts I shared earlier. Domestic fabs has definitely gained a larger share of world wide IC output capacity, but not as much as the actual value-based marketshare, which is the one that matters.

Without EUVL, it will be increasingly more difficult to keep or close the gap between domestic IC industry and rest of the world. 5nm node capacity is still expected to grow as well as its value. 3nm is expected to be an even bigger node.

I wouldn't underestimate the value of trailing edge nodes. While value-based marketshare and thus the leading edge nodes is what matters in peace time, trailing edge nodes is what matters when crap hits in the fan. As the Russian sanctions have shown, while their commodity based economy may not be valued much in dollar terms, when the world can't function without your commodity your economy matters a heck a lot more than can be measured in dollars.

The world can function fairly well without <10nm chips, but it can't without the commodity chips. Every electronic item needs them, from your $10 Casio watches to $100 microwaves to $1000 refrigerators to $50k EVs. Also like oil/gas production, even when other countries have the capability to step up production, they won't be able to do it quickly and it's a sector with diminishing returns so people are less willing to invest in them. If China can capture as much of the commodity chip market as Russia did the fossil fuel/agricultural sector in the world, it would be a very potent insurance against blanket sanctions that Russia is facing.

Smaller nodes have more value per chip but older nodes make the bulk of the chips fabricated. One 7nm SOC vs a thousand 130nm MCUs for example.
