Third and Last Chinese-Built C28A Corvette Delivered to the Algerian Navy

The third and last C28A Corvette on order for the Algerian Navy has been delivered by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China). Algeria signed a contract with China Shipbuilding Trading Co (CSTC) for construction of three C28A corvettes in March 2012.
he first two were delivered respectively on August 15, 2014 and January 26, 2016.

CSTC representatives at DSA 2014 explained to Navy Recognition that the ship would be about 120 meters in length, a breadth of 14.4 meters and a draft of 3.87 meters for a displacement of about 2880 tons.

The three corvettes are fitted with a mix of Chinese and Western systems. The hull mounted sonar will be of Chinese origin, but Algeria has selected

and Kelvin Hughes for the navigation radar.

ccording to the CSTC representatives, the weapons fit will be of Chinese origin exclusively and will consist in:
- A single barreled 76mm main gun
- 8x C802 anti-ship missiles
- 1x FM90N launcher with 8x surface to air missiles
- 2x Type 730 CIWS located on top of the helicopter hangar

The corvette has some stealth attributes, such as the exhaust gases funnels located right on the water line on the sides of the hull in order to reduce its IR signature.

According to China state media, the class has set several news records in tonnage, fire and combat capability for exported Chinese military ships. These advances reflect the maturation of China's shipbuilding industry, including electronic weapons system capabilities that have reached international levels. From all appearances, the successful construction of this latest frigate is only the beginning of China's expanded influence in military ship trade around the world.

On 12 Aug. 2016, Indonesia Marine Corps tested the newly acquired Norinco Type90 35mm AA Gun + AF902 Fire control system. The technical support personnel from Norinco were present at the test site. No SAM (TY-90 or PL-9C) unit was seen on the photos. Whether Indonesia has bought such upgrading option is unclear.

Indonesian president watches failed firings of Chinese-made C-705 missiles at naval exercise

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Navy International
15 September 2016

Key Points
Attempts to launch C-705 missiles from two Indonesian warships during an exercise has failed
Failures come against the backdrop of increased spending on Chinese-made weapon systems by Jakarta

The Indonesian Navy's (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL's) attempt to successfully launch Chinese-made C-705 anti-ship missiles from two indigenously built attack craft during a major naval exercise has failed, sources from within the service informed IHS Jane's on 15 September.

The missiles, which were deployed onboard the KCR-40-class missile attack craft KRI Clurit (641) and KRI Kujang (642), each failed at different stages of their launches on 14 September.

Clurit and Kujang each fired a single C-705 missile during Exercise 'Armada Jaya' 2016 which was conducted in the Java Sea.

Both attempts were made in full view of Indonesian President Joko Widodo who was there to witness the exercise from onboard the landing platform dock ship KRI Banjarmasin (592). Accompanying him was TNI-AL chief Admiral Ade Supandi, and Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) chief General Gatot Nurmantyo.

According to TNI-AL sources, the first C-705 deployed on Clurit failed to launch upon command, but fired unexpectedly about five minutes later after the ship's crew failed to observe a misfire procedure.

The missile failed to hit its designated target for the exercise, the recently decommissioned Tisza-class auxiliary support ship, Karimata (960). The second C-705 missile, which was fired from Kujang , failed during mid-flight, and subsequently also failed to hit the same target.

Besides Clurit and Kujang , 'Armada Jaya' also involves the participation of about 7,000 TNI personnel and 39 naval vessels including a Cakra Type 209/1300-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK).

Other TNI-AL weapons that will be tested during the exercise, that runs until the end of September 2016, include the C-802 anti-ship missile that has also been acquired from China.

Yes, China should be sending a team of specialities over free of charge to figure out exactly what happened.

C705 is joint venture between China and Indonesia with local content and final assembly done by the Indonesian themselves. It is not a pure export from China
China just supply the component that is not source locally and technology transfer. Plus the ship system integration is done by the Indonesian themselves

So yes they need to send investigation . But to put the blame on China is not fair because it is too early to pin the blame

Actually no Indonesia's own produced missiles are supposed to be armed on to the KCR-60s not the KCR-40s with a different launcher.

Here is a quote made in 2013 about plans to produce them in Indonesia;

They are not a joint venture either, they are license built meaning the technology is solely from PRC.

It is technology licensing the way I read the agreement with the first hundred are supplied by China BUT SEEM LIKE THE INDONESIA IS DOING THE SHIP INTEGRATION THEMSELVES. The missile has been tested with good result previously. The delay in launch is most likely due to failure either in communication system or ship integration

-ly-80 Air Defence Missile of Alit,
Aa Gun & Ammunition of NORINCO and so on.

Contracts to 2 C-705 missile cooperation between Indonesia and China signed in 2013, through a partnership because of the closeness and friendship of the two countries.

As for the contract to a third of the C-705 missile cooperation signed by the end of 2014. As a follow up of the contract, dikirimlah missiles C-705 (corresponding to the contact 3) to be tested for test firing by Indonesia in 2015. The Credit Agreement approved soon and L / C opening soon.

Indonesia was preparing everything needed to test the missile C-705. China will set up a program for the navy forces to conduct training in China, after Indonesia approved the missile tests conducted by the factory.

China advised the Navy to purchase a vehicle anti-ship missile launcher surface of the C-705, for easy operation, maintenance and repair at a later date.

Discussion Program transfer technology (ToT) C-705 missiles was raised in meeting DICM to 4, dated August 27, 2015 in Beijing China. SASTIND China will soon learn the latest basic agreement of the Missile Technology Transfer Program C-705, between the Ministry of Defence and SASTIND China, the agreement was proposed by the Ministry of Defence. China immediately responded.

Discussions between CPMIEC China with representatives of PT DI concerning facilities ToT Program C-705 missile took place at DICM to 4, which discusses: the amount of material and the number of missiles that will be prepared.

Indonesia will prepare a budget for the purposes of providing material and facilities from the Final Assembly Line C-705 missiles and missile components (SKD parts).

PT DI designated by KKIP as a leader who worked on this project, will be provided by the Technology Transfer CPMIEC China, so has the ability of producing C-705 missile system.

PT DI will become a supplier to the Indonesian Navy, having the ability to produce consistent C-705 missiles.

Both parties then make a list / register sequence of work to be undertaken by PT DI as missile shock / overload test system, electric system pre-installation and so on.

PT DI said unable to meet and do most of the list to be done (there are 10 items). PT DI also asked to share knowledge and techniques of preparation installation of missiles to the Navy.

PT DI requested documentation Transfer of Technology and Technical Training ToT exempt from fees. But the Chinese side undertakes if Indonesia least ordered 100 missiles C-705 (missile SKD) in Phase I.

Local missile-related content will be provided by PT DI.

CPMIEC China requested that at least made the purchase of 50 C-705 missiles in SKD form, to start the transfer of technology. ToT and technical documentation will be provided free of charge on ToT Phase I, if Indonesia bought 100 missiles in SKD form. Its formulation is being studied by both parties.

PT DI said it would examine internally and report them to the Ministry of Defence Indonesia. (JakartaGreater)

According to Janes it seems the launchers were jointly built.

The 250-tonne ships are powered by three MAN V12 engines and feature hulls built of aluminium and high-tensile steel. The KCR-40 class can reach a top speed of 30 kt.The company told IHS Jane's that besides the CIWS, Clurit and Kujang were also recently fitted with two transversely mounted launchers for the C-705 anti-ship missiles jointly produced by PT Pindad and China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation.

This would be natural with various black boxes in place, the Indonesians would not have been able to develop them completely by themselves.
