You got me wrong. The photos are genius but the news might be fake. How can you verify that the tank (T-72) was hit by Type-96? Don't you see the level of damage of the T-72? Can tank rounds be so powerful? These are the questions to be answer before we jump to conclusion that it was a kill by Type-96.

Iraqi tanks were routinely destroyed in this manner during Desert Storm.

For comparison this is the aftermath of T-72 being hit by a M-1 fired sabot round:

Do you think the turret separation is due to internal munition cooking off or the sabot hits the ring (whatever you call the connection point) and dislocated the turret? I noticed not all destroyed tanks by other tanks have displaced turrets.

Since I see the top of the turret go blown off, I believe only the driver (separated from the rest of the tank crew) has a possible chance of escape.

With the fire raging I think the drive is going to get burnt badly even if he manages to escape through the front hatch. Human remains will depend on fire temperatures, so I was thinking whether any remains found would be charred or would they simply be in ashes.

I think it takes long periods of high temperature burning for human remains to turn to ash completely. I remeber seeing nigerian victims of an exploding pipeline fire, the bones wasn't destroyed through burning and you can still make out their outline clearly.

Damage like that observed on the T-72 is not unusual, especially if it penetrates the tank's hull and sets off the ammunition.

When a round HEAT or APFSDS penetrates the vehicle's hull in a T-72 type tank, it can very easily set off the propellant cases stored there.

The T-72 (or T-54/55, T-62 and T-80 for that matter) store the bulk of their ammunition in the hull.

The T-72/80 also use separate loading ammunition, while the T-54/55 use fixed rounds, that is, the projectiles are separate from the propellant charges.

A hull penetration creates sparks and hot, flying metal that can easily ignite these and produce an internal explosion that cleanly separates the turret from the hull.

I remember watching video from the war in Bosnia-and-Herzegovina where the Croats staged an ambush with their T-72 vs those of the Bosnian Serbs.

The were at the foot of a hill and let the Serb tanks climb the crest and shot at their underbellies - the tanks exploded and the ammunition burned so furiously that it was like watching a rocket upside down.

From Jane's Defense Weekly:

Algeria orders Chinese corvettes and German frigates - Hedley Brampson

The Algerian Ministry of Defence has ordered three large corvettes from China and two MEKO A-200 frigates - with an option for two more - from Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

TKMS edged out rivals including France's DCNS, which was offering its FREMM design, to secure a frigate contract reportedly worth between EUR2.176 billion and EUR2.5 billion (USD2.86 billion and USD3.28 billion).

The deal also includes six AgustaWestland Super Lynx 300 helicopters optimised for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW), plus training and infrastructure/maintenance packages.

Meanwhile, IHS Jane's understands that Algeria has contracted China State Trading Corporation (CSTC) to supply the three corvettes, which will be built at either Guangzhou Shipyard International or Huangpu Shipyard. Displacing about 2,800 tonnes, these vessels will be considerably larger than previously thought.

The corvettes will be fitted with MTU engines and control systems while China's Systems Engineering Research Institute, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, is expected to provide the combat management system (CMS).

Although the TKMS deal was signed on 26 March, its effective date is still some months away; the first of the two MEKO A-200 frigates is scheduled for delivery about 48 months after this date.

The platform is essentially identical to the South African Navy's 3,648 tonne Valour-class frigate and will feature the same advanced CODAG-WARP (combined diesel and gas turbine/waterjet and refined propeller) propulsion system.

Armament is believed to include an Oto Melara 127 mm gun (firing Vulcano guided ammunition), Rheinmetall's close-in weapon system (possibly the MLG 27 mount), Saab's RBS 15 Mk 3 surface-to-surface missile, Denel's Umkhonto surface-to-air missile and Eurotorp's MU90 lightweight torpedo.

The CMS will be supplied by Atlas Electronik while air search radars are thought to be from EADS (perhaps a variant of the TRS-3D set). Sonar systems have not yet been finalised but will include a towed array system.

L-3 MAPPS is expected to provide an integrated platform management solution with advanced battle damage control and onboard team training capability. The Super Lynx helicopters will be armed with the MU90 torpedo in the ASW role and Denel's Mokopa air-to-ground missile for ASuW.

It is likely that another batch of corvettes is being built for the Algerian Navy by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, however details are not available.

Meanwhile, Algeria is building a single 80-85 m corvette domestically and in mid-2011 contracted Italian company Orrizonte Sistemi Navali for a large amphibious/logistic support ship due for completion in 2015. Other requirements include two mine countermeasures vessels (with an option for two more) and two submarines.

Additional details regarding the above post. Any clue as to what type of Corvette China is going to build for Algeria?

Egypt produce UAV in Cooperation With China

http://en.ruvsa.com/news/development/egypt/

Chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization, Hamdy Weheba said that Egypt has started the second phase to produce 12 Egyptian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) “ASN-209″ in cooperation with a Chinese company. He added that the local manufacturing in this plane reaches nearly 99.5 percent.

Weheba noted that the first phase has produced 6 aircrafts of this type. He stressed that the organization, in cooperation with the Chinese company, succeeded in the manufacture of 120 advanced training aircraft of the type “K-8″.

Details of the platform from the ASN site.

ASN-209 UAV System is a multi-purpose UAV product with mature technology. Via data link and ground control subsystem, ASN-209 UAV can perform aerial reconnaissance, battle field survey, target location, destroy validation and artillery fire adjustment in day and night in real time. ASN-209 UAV System is consists of aircraft, airborne mission payload, GCS, launch and recovery equipment.

ASN-209 uses digital flight control and navigation system, its flight control mode has manual, program and emergency control. It wasGPS and data link to locate the aircraft. The system operation is easy to master.

ASN-209 uses rocket booster launch, parachute recovery, no need to use the airport makes the system operation flexible. GCS adopts digital computer control technology, which enables multitask planning and real-time editing during flight.

ASN-209 uses 2-boom, rear installed engine disposition. Excellent overall aerodynamic design and EMC design enable the system to install many different kinds of airborne equipment, such as electronic countermeasures, communication relay and weather detection.

The coverage radius is 200 km, endurance over 10 hours. ASN-209 UAV System can supervise big area and frontier within one sortie. If 2 UAVs take duty by turns, ASN-209 UAV System can work for 24 hours continuously.
