I believe that's a CS/LM5 12.7mm rotary machine around 0:04 mark.

Open canopy seems like a big no-no in the drone age, it doesn't look like the gun can elevate too much for anti drone work either. Probably done for economic reasons?

Not even anti-drone. Snipers and shrapnel would be a big problem. For a light humvee-style vehicle it's okay since those aren't really armoured to begin with, but this is an otherwise fully armoured vehicle.

Considered that this version of VN-22 carries 10 infrantry, armed with a gatling machine gun protected by open armoured plates, it is better than most wheel APC or other troop carrier.

These photos were taken during the demostration visit of Iraqi minister of interior indicate that it would likely be used by ministry of interior. And probably this APC would be used on border patrols in desert.

If they need better protection for the patrol group, they can add another VN-22 IFV variant with cannon and ATGM missiles or assault gun variant like what was displayed in previous Zhuhai Airshow.
