chinese laser weapon development

Quickie

Colonel
fourth picture, as blitzo said, a massive rotatable stand. Much bigger than THEL. However something is not right in this picture: where is the background? also the stand appears old and damaged.

Looks to me the rotatable stand had just finished assembly or machining work and is still without paintwork. The huge wheels on both sides point to some heavy equipment to be mounted.

First picture, i have no ideia of what it is.

Second picture, its some kind of moveable platform, akin to the ones used in flight simulators.

third picture, a primitive laser platform

To be fair you can't really tell how advanced a laser is by its stand/turret...

fourth picture, as blitzo said, a massive rotatable stand. Much bigger than THEL. However something is not right in this picture: where is the background? also the stand appears old and damaged.

The picture was obviously edited, could be part of a brochure or slideshow/presentation, I wouldn't loook too much into that.
That stand to me looks like it's right off the proverbial manufacturing line, rather than looking damaged -- it has to be assembled.

fifth picture, a small rotatable stand mounting a laser ring. Probably a developing/testing device.

fourth and fifth pictures appear to be quite old, and to a lesser extent, second and third. Judging by the pictures, are you sure they werent taken from a museum ?

If it were from a musuem I think we wouldn't see the control modules etc, and the background would be nicer -- though I agree the pictures may be a little old.

From these pictures at least I think we can tell there is a lot of R and D from the PRC in lasers, whether it be for military or civilian use. Maybe we'll see when/if this laser destroyer thingy comes out.

Rumors are there may be some significant exposure coming in March. We don't know whether it will be a new fighter/drone or the fable laser weapon so stay tuned.

Banned Idiot
around the late 90's, US intelligent satelite spotted 4 Chinese laser beam weapon mounted in track vehicle.
(german also have similiar program, laser beam weapon mounted on leaopard-1 chassic, but the end of cold war killed the program)
biggest bottle neck was how to aim accurately at the target.

Nothing definitive just yet. This paper from 2008, however, indicates that the Chinese military is at least somewhat interested in the shipborne laser weapon concept.

Chinese test of fiberoptics laser against aluminum/steel targets. Once again I don't know whether they are using it for military or civilian applications.

Is it me or does the cut seems too rough for civilian laser cutting?

The guy (and his team) who developed the (might be) shipborne high-powered multi-phase direct-current power plant (or something like that), has been reported to received the "National Scientific-Technology Development Award" (国家科技进步奖) - an award get you to shake hands with boss Hu, and frequently unclaimed throughout the years.

To put it more sense, the Chief Engineer who in charge of J-20 project, DID NOT get this award.

This man and his project is also heavily discussed among Chinese military forums, for the link to possible A*s-kicking-ship-engine, and possible shipborne laser weapons.

Professional person at this forum can take some more in-depth look into this matter.

Do you have an article on this?

Brother, you read Chinese, you can search the term “国家科技进步奖".

I am not good at translate "Chinese characterized"(中国特色) stuff into English, especially at a forum where all kinds of deadly serious people are lurking around.

Did a search of that term and it seems the most recent report in 4 Mar 2011 is about some guy who was originally awarded this prize, but got stripped because of plagiarism. (

Anyway, found this interesting list of recipients of what is said to be the "National Most High Tech Prize" (loose translation of “国家最高科学技术奖”). Of interest in that list (

) are the following people:

2003年度获奖人

王永志(1932.11~) 男,航天技术专家,中国工程院院士,中国人民解放军总装备部研究员。 (Aerospace specialist from PLA General Armaments Department who won the prize in 2003).

2008年度获奖人

徐光宪(1920.11~) 男,化学家,中国科学院院士,北京大学教授。(Chemist from Beijing University who won the prize in 2008).

2009年度获奖人

孙家栋(1929.04~) 男,航天技术专家,中国科学院院士,现任中国航天科技集团公司高级技术顾问。[Aerospace specialist from AVIC(?) who won the prize in 2009].

The chemist is probably the only one who may be involved in laser-related R&D.
