A model of the VN20 from IDEX 2023. It has a different turret, with what appears to be a 100mm gun and a 30mm auto-cannon. Also note the new optical turret. Might it have some kind of laser countermeasure built in?

According to Shilao this particular model of VN20 was designed to very specific customer requirements. The customer want:
  • excellent all round protection, the customer want to minimize casualty in combat
  • easy getting in/out with a big rear door, none of that

  • the customer however loves BMP-3's turret with 100mm gun plus autocannon and want that kept
  • periscope sights in the back for all passengers
  • loads of remote operated machine guns, including one in the back
  • giant size of the vehicle not an issue

Isn’t this basically confirming that UAE or Kuwait will be buying it then?

UAE only buys the best of the best. They already have the BMP-3 so they want something better. Especially with them being in the conflict in Yemen.

the Mengshi is really long. is that ideal? could it be a weakness?
An increased size profile is indeed a possible "weakness." It's a bigger target. That's just life though, everything will come with trade-offs. Whether these trade-offs will significantly impact the intended use of the vehicle is a different matter.
