It is a BMP-1.

The later variant has a new turret with 30mm gun though.

Depends on what caliber. 12,7mm from 500m is probably pen it. GPMG rounds from realistic ranges should be a non-issue.

Most BMP-1 Era IFV has rather mediocre side protection anyway, although most are rated immun against 7,62mm. I think it is a bit unreasonable to expect a BMP-1 copy (unmodernized in terms of protection) to have massive side protection against 12,7mm.
