there was also a 60kW hybrid motor.
this is truly interesting stuff that they are showcasing these larger hybrid electric turbine at same time as AEP/S/F-100 engines that are about to join service. would lend credence that they are more mature than one might otherwise think

I don’t understand how this works. In a hybrid turbofan electrical power can be used to drive the fan. What does it do here?

iirc it's basically a electric transmission instead of a conventional gearbox for a turboprop.
plus (battery) energy storage which is the key of the idea.

The propeller is solely driven by the electric motor with electricity provided by both the generator directly and battery packs. Battery only kicks in during takeoff and situation when max power is needed because cruising uses much lower power than takeoff. GT engines are only optimized at a certain power level, any extra power margine (for takeoff) leads to lower efficiency at cruising speed. This hybrid engine is essentially taking the same advantage of IEPS in ships and the missile TEL viechle and Type 100 tank, to lower the max power demand of ICE/GT engine to save fuel and increase range.

Anytime that you can separate the power generation and consumption through some kind of battery system, you are going to get greater efficiency in fuel consumption.

similarly, you get greater efficiency and less losses on a electric driven system operating at high voltage platform vs mechanical one. It is also more compact if you use a higher voltage platform so you can save space and weight for other stuff.
