Yep, if it made financial sense to localize this, or if it could have additional benefits in other domains, then by all means it was a sensible investment.

I agree with Bltizo .... wondering the percentage of the cost of imported ballpoint pen to the total cost of the pen? ..... I'd guess less than 5% ... so perhaps the incentive was not big enough to research it until the PM challenged it. $15M is not small, but really nothing compare to the industry

lol, finally they acquired technology to produce ball pens! After just 5 years (!) of trying. Now to the tests (and I wouldn't be surprised if those wouldn't go wrong). Soviets were smart with pencils when they sent people into the space, I wonder what keeps China from conquering the Sun?

Perhaps US embargo on something else.

That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.

And still (2,3mm vs 0,4mm in the 'West') some 500% behind...
Keep laughing while you can. It won't be long before China stops importing the steel. At that time someone will start crying for losing the largest market. No matter how you portray it, China is certainly going to be the one laughes at the end.

I don't care. So long as China eats Japan's lunch. Again!

as satisfying as it might feel, I don't think we need to descend to and replicate the kind of tone that janiz and others may express.

No need for statements with a "china stronggkk1!1 japan sux!" tone imo.

Likely the cost saving isn't the biggest gain. Neither was it due to political pressure from the PM.

It is said that TISCO took 5 years to get the job done. So they started much earlier than, when in 2016, the PM used the fact that China was not able to make such steel as an example to illustrate the importance of "supply side reform". And only then the topic became hot in Chinese media.

By the way, the video says China spends "over 17m USD" for the steel. I saw the 15m figure somewhere else. Same ballpark nonetheless.

Yeah, sure. If you can predict the future why are you wasting your time here? I bet that you know something I can invest my lose money into! PM me fotrune-teller after all those big Chinese companies will give you some free time in predicting the future! A fair dividend will be yours. Of course I can go to PRC in the meanwhile and you'll be stuck with zero while officials will be happy with my $ but that's your risk!

Go on and tell John Kerry, who, at the US Naval Academy on 10th Jan 2017, said,
We’re the most powerful country on the planet, yes, and we’re the biggest economy in the world, yes. But China will be eventually just by virtue of its size.

I disagree. He has been given the latitude to write what he feels fit as allowed by the mod. But let us agree to disagree.
I would shut my mouth and wouldn't post something like 'we discovered how to make ball pens after 5 years of research!' news here.

You can go to space without it, you can build up an entire aircraft carrier without that! That's just a small step. In 2 years any foreign ball pens will be put on embargo in PRC. That's for sure!

The fact that they couldn't come up with such a technology isn't laughable - there are few factories in the world that aren't willing to share their knowledge with anybody else. That doesn't make China a bad place to live. It's still the most beautifull country in the world and everyone knows it (much more than US in my opinion).

But don't portray it is a paradise, because it isn't. That's all. There were at least 5 users quoting my post - none of them showed any remorse and all of them write from outside of PRC, being in the US (I suppose). To sum it up with something that you've never heard about I assume, I'll cite Nikolai Gogol from his great 'Inspector General' published in 1836 - almost 200 years ago

What are you laughing at? You are laughing at yourselves!

Calm down. No need to pump out such non-sense.
