Great post.

When the US dominated the world in 1985, the electricity usage reflected that:

When China's GDP by PPP grew past the US a decade and half ago, electricity usage reflected that:

There is no way anyone -- unless living in a fantasy -- can seriously say the US is a bigger economy today when the difference is this outrageously large:

Also of note is that Japan and Russia (the two previous "challengers" to US economic supremacy that some like to compare China to) were not even close to half of US electricity generation during their respective peaks.

Great point. And those countries became challengers when their economies matured.

China has already beaten the US as a developing economy and is consuming twice the electricity of the US with a lot of room to grow.

A maturing China in the coming decades will expand the difference far more.

Look at the slope (delta) of the growth rates between the two countries. China's rises up like Mount Everest compared to the US (and the rest of the world.) China is blowing every other country out of the water and is doing it basically as a teenager who haven't even fully matured yet.

David P. Goldman considers China has successfully deflated its real estate bubble and is on its way to become the most powerful high-tech manufacturer by far in the world.

Those who don't know better will spew BS.

Maybe Serpentza could shack up with Kyle Bass when they are both unemployed.

Like others have pointed out, it is likely due to Wood Dragon year in 2024 ... hopefully it will continue, more babies is GOOD

It will like go down in 2025 because people in China generally deferred marriages in 2024 due to the lack of a Spring in the lunar calendar (寡妇年).

China's value-added industrial output hit 40.5 trillion yuan in 2024, with the manufacturing sector maintaining its position as the world's largest for 15 consecutive years. The industrial and information technology sectors contributed over 40% to the country's economic growth, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Tuesday..

my sense is that a lot of the additional in gas consumption is due to petrochemical sector. There have been more power generation from NG, but that's still just a smaller fraction of gas consumption in China.

my theory is that they significantly expanded chemical sector in the recent years at the expense of Euros, Koreans and Japanese. That explains why the energy consumption growth is so much higher than GDP growth. Normally, it should be the other way around,
