When China's GDP by PPP grew past the US a decade and half ago, electricity usage reflected that:

There is no way anyone -- unless living in a fantasy -- can seriously say the US is a bigger economy today when the difference is this outrageously large:

Also of note is that Japan and Russia (the two previous "challengers" to US economic supremacy that some like to compare China to) were not even close to half of US electricity generation during their respective peaks.
