According to this article, China accounts for 35% luxury goods market and that is stupid high. I don't get why the Chinese so obssessed with Dior, Fendi, Gucci, etc. They are just stupid bags with ridiculous price. I'd rather have the money buying them flowing to stock market instead.
Clearly you aren't a women.

Every society/culture has status competition. For whatever reason, in China a lot of the status competition seems to occur through the purchase/possession/display of Western "designer" clothing and accessories.

I agree with you: It's f*cking stupid.

I'd much rather see Chinese people compete for status through their squat and deadlift numbers.

That just prove that Chinese goods have not shake off the cheap goods status from even Chinese consumers. Cheap is good but it also means you cannot store your wealth. For a Chinese, a gucci bag or an Iphone (and of course real estate) is a better means of wealth storage than the financial market. That also means the financial market has malfunctioned (of course it did when your stock market is half of what it was a decade ago)

The hell you talking about?
Americans buy LV and Gucci as well, does that mean American goods have not shaken off the cheap goods status even from Americans consumers? Or the American financial system malfunctioned? Or German consumers who but LV and Gucci?

One has nothing to do with the other.

Nobody stores value in Gucci bags or iPhones, the people who buy do so for perceived validation, look at what happened to Korean brands after THAAD for how easy it is to shut them down.

Now you're just proving you have a highly questionable agenda.

By same logic American goods have not shake off the cheap good status since what luxury American handbag brands can you name?

At least China sells a lot of premium product in makeup, fashion etc. While US doesn't. Most Chinese accept a premium Chinese brand as equivalent alternative to some other world class premium brand, while most US elites won't buy GM, Chrysler or American wines (closest things to US premium) even if you waterboard them.

Actually, Chinese consumers regard Huawei smartphones as the status symbol, as the iPhone 16 is already discounted.
