Well we will know during the next trade war or the next hot war...

All the indications point to China urgently preparing itself for the next trade war or hot war
eg. Technology independence, nuclear weapons buildup and preparing the domestic population for a hostile cold war with the USA

So we can say that the current US-China trade war has failed and actually had the opposite effect of what is intended.
China didn't fold and capitulate to the US. China is now determined to cut any major dependency on the USA.

None of this is a surprise. Why should China fold?

As per the World Bank, China has had a larger economy than the USA for some years now. ANd it should double again in the next 10-15 years.
A few years ago, the National Science Foundation also reported to Congress that China spend more on technology R&D. Given time, they should be able to catchup in every realm

The rare earth thing wasn't intended to be used as a weapon against the west. Various high tech industries require a steady supply of them, and the Chinese figured it would make more sense to export technology rather than raw materials. Keeping domestic RE prices low helps Chinese industry far more than exporting a fairly cheap metal would do. Not much different a country that doesn't export crude oil and only the refined products.

Rare earth metals are abundant in the earth's crust. America setting up their own RE extraction helps China as more supply means cheaper prices.

China doesn't need hundreds of millions of children to be trained to fight enemies in a generic control room.

If anything, you can take any 21 year old, stick them into a control room simulator, then have an expert in 3months.
Do they need 10s of millions of engineers and biotech experts?
