NANNING -- Typhoon Talim, the fourth typhoon this year, landed in the coastal area of South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region early Tuesday, the typhoon's second landfall in China after it first landed in Guangdong province on Monday night.

The typhoon landed at 5:45 am on Tuesday in the city of Beihai in Guangxi, and reached the city of Qinzhou at 9 am, according to the regional meteorological bureau.

The maximum wind speeds near the center of the typhoon reached 25 meters per second, and it is expected to move toward the northwest at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour.

Rainstorms are forecast in the cities of Qinzhou, Fangchenggang and Chongzuo, with the gust speeds reaching as high as 33 meters per second in the southern and central parts of the region, the bureau said.

After a three-year suspension because of COVID-19, the Xiamen-Kinmen Cross-Strait Swimming Competition resumed on Saturday, with 200 competitors from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao racing across open water from Xiamen, Fujian province, to Kinmen, Taiwan.

The seven-kilometer race, the 11th installment of the event since 2009, was divided into three groups — two for men and one for women. As in previous years, the competition was a relay of two swimmers.

To ensure the safety of the athletes, the organizing committee had formulated a security, emergency and medical response plan involving 115 cross-Strait rescue support vessels and 263 life-saving support personnel to provide "one-for-one" support for competitors.



The sixth Xiamen-Kinmen Youth Swimming Competition was held in late June in Xiamen. This supporting activity attracted 728 competitors from 22 teams from both sides. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

Cross-Strait youth exchange activities were also organized, providing a platform for young people to interact.

The night economy has lightened up cities in China as high temperatures continue to sweep the country at day time. Southwest China's Chongqing municipality has launched more than 200 themed events this summer to boost consumption at night.

The Anqing city of Anhui province, Yulin city of Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, and Xi'an city of Shaanxi province have all promoted night-time activities via night fairs to boost consumption and provided convenience for residents and tourists.

Sixty-five young people from Taiwan and Fujian provinces visited the Haixun 06, a patrol and rescue vessel in the Taiwan Strait, and watched a maritime and air search and rescue drill in the waters off Mawei of Fuzhou, Fujian on Tuesday.

These young people are participating in the Fujian Maritime Culture Branch Camp of the 20th Youth Summer Camp organized by the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots.
