Planting shifted into high gear recently in a demonstration zone for super hybrid rice — 6.73 hectares in the Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture of Yunnan province.

The zone, located in Mengzi's Qianjin village, is an agricultural project of Yuan Longping, a pioneer of hybrid rice in China. It will take three days to plant the seedlings.

Last year, the output of the zone reached 1,138 kilograms per mu and now it is expected to reach 1,200 kilograms per mu.

Gedor, 34, used to live in a remote pastoral area in Amdo County in northern Tibet Autonomous Region with his family. Restricted by the living conditions, they earned a living by pasture and the low income of their small grocery store.

In late 2019, with the support of local authorities, 4,058 residents in Amdo and Co Nyi, two counties at a high altitude of over 4,500 meters, were relocated. Gedor and his family moved to a relocation site in Gangdoi Town of Gonggar County. The site has easy access to roads and various facilities including market, hospital and school. The convenience of new life has encouraged Gedor and his wife Rolpai to open a Tibetan butter teahouse for neighboring residents to spend leisure time.
