BEIJING -- China stepped up its greening efforts last year with 3.998 million hectares of forest planted, official data showed Tuesday.

The figure was higher than the 3.83 million hectares of afforestation seen in 2022, according to a report of the National Greening Commission. In 2023, the country also restored 4.379 million hectares of degraded grassland and treated 1.905 million hectares of sandy and stony land.

China on Tuesday celebrates its 46th National Tree Planting Day.

The traditional Dragon-Head-Raising Festival, or Longtaitou Festival, falls on March 11 this year.

A well-known phrase goes, "Er yue er, long tai tou," meaning, "On the second day of the second month, the dragon lifts his head."

Ancient people believed that after this day, rainfall increases because the rain-bringing Dragon King has awakened from his winter sleep.



Some believe that going to the barber on this day gets rid of bad luck.

Zheng Jun, president of Hubei University of Education, recently shared the story of the "Ferry Teacher of the Mountains" Wang Zhijun during the country's two sessions period. Zheng is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, China's top political advisory body.

Wang's is an inspiring story of resilience. The 48-year-old has been teaching at a humble rural school in Chongyang county, Hubei province, for more than 28 years. His classroom is upstream from Qingshan Reservoir, surrounded by water on three sides and is difficult to reach.

Wang's school, the only one in the rural village, has been destroyed by rainstorms and has undergone reconstruction and relocation over the years.

Undaunted, Wang treated the school as his home and bought a small wooden boat to help ferry students from remote areas so they could make it to school on time.

When the weather is terrible or the water level is too high, Wang invites his students to stay and eat with him in safety.

"Some students, sometimes, even lived there for more than a week when their parents couldn't come get them. The children consider it as their second home," Wang said.

A nationwide dragon boat racing event kicked off in the Nanhai district of Foshan, Guangdong province, which is known as an important place for traditional dragon boat culture.

According to the event's organizers, the Nanhai Dragon Boat Super League, or the China National Dragon Boat Festival, aims to develop world-class teams in the traditional sport and expand its cultural influence.

The first race was held on Monday in the ancient Yannan village in Nanhai, marking Dragon Head-raising Day, which falls on the second day of the second lunar month.

The event featured folk activities such as a dragon head-raising ceremony, a colorful dragon boat parade, and a dragon boat banquet for hundreds of attendees. The dragon boats in the colorful parade were decorated with gongs, drums, umbrellas and colorful flags.

The Super League is the first nationwide dragon boat racing event.
