LONDON (Reuters) - A huge explosion hit an industrial area in the northeastern Chinese city of Tianjin late on Wednesday evening, triggering a blast wave felt several kilometres away and injuring at least 50 people, domestic media reported.

State broadcaster China Central Television reported that the blast had erupted in a shipment of explosives at around 11.30 pm local time and that an unknown number of people had been injured, the South China Morning Post said on its website.

Videos of the explosion showed flames lighting up the night sky and state-run news agency Xinhua quoted residents in nearby districts as saying the blast had shattered windows. Citing a local hospital, Xinhua said more than 50 people had been injured.

Tianjin: Watch the huge explosions that rocked the Chinese city
Dramatic images as a series of explosions in Tianjin, northern China, caused a huge mushroom cloud and triggered shockwaves that could be felt miles away

Footage circulating online appears to show a massive explosion in China's northern city of Tianjin, injuring at least 300 people.

Reportedly caused by a shipment of explosives in the city's port, videos from the scene show a dramatic fireball exploding in the distance.

The official Xinhua news agency said the blast happened at around 11:30 pm (1630 GMT), when a deafening bang was heard as plumes of flame lit up the sky, scattering dust dozens of metres into the air.

It is still unclear what buildings and how many people were affected by the explosion, but one man filming was blown off his feet by the force.
