A worker demolishes a 45m tall chimney stack one brick at a time in Taiyuan city, Shanxi province, China. Thanks to cheap labour this Chinese demolition firm has found the best way to demolish buildings is one brick at a time. Company boss Chung Lei said: "If you are looking at demolishing anything here you need to spend a fortune for the explosives and the license to use them, as well as demolition experts and all sorts of insurances against making any mistakes. In contrast you can also do it with one man and a hammer drill."

China's biggest annual shopping bonanza smashed records as online sales on e-commerce giant Alibaba alone hit $9.3 billion, more than the total racked up the same day last year across the industry. That followed a frenetic morning of shopping, sales on Alibaba's e-shopping platforms exceeded $2 billion in just the first hour. The online shopping festival is called 'Singles' Day' and started as a way to celebrate single people. It's now morphed into a frenzy that attracts buyers both single and paired.
