That's great. When Singaporeans fall they quickly get up again - they never give up & will try and try again and again. That goes not only for Lion Dance but also in everything that needs to be done.

Singaporean lion dance fell twice during international contest in Taiwan 2014. However, the performance is great with both forward and backward moves on the beams.

Yes, but these guys are just volunteers and I have to say they're pretty good! I volunteer to participate in a Lion dance team once (Tail end of course) and we practiced for about 3 weeks just to do the basic moves. My team didn't even do any of those hopping on top the poles or large ball. I'm sure if Cambodia puts in the money to support a professional team year round they can compete internationally. As you notices in the professional contest the team lions are very well made. The eye brows and mouth movements are better than the amateur.

In Cambodia there are five formal Lion Dance teams from five Chinese Association namely: the 朝州 (Tea Chew)、客属 (Hakka)、福建 (Hok Kien)、海南 (Hai Nan) and 广肇 (Cantonese). Each has a public school, a temple and a Lion Dance team. The main finance source of these association are donations from local and oversea businesses. On CNY days, lion dance teams visit their donaters to 拜年 and get the red pockets. Red pockets usually vary from $10,000 to a few hundred dollar. The Tea Chew Lion Dance team is largest one with dancing on poles. Other teams just dance on the ground but Hakka team is special with Dragon Dance. Other teams that do not dare to dance on poles because they worry about the professional of the dancers that might cause severe injury if fall off.

When Lion Dance teams was first formed, they hired coaches from oversea (China and Singapore). Salaries for coaches were something like $3,000 a month as I could remember. These salaries are very high and most associations in Cambodia could not afford. So they hired the coaches for a short period, and after they mastered the basic skill, they do the practice by themselves. Lion Dances are performed only once a year for about 5 to 6 days. And they do practice a month before the performance. Unless they hire well-experienced coaches and do practice all year long, there won't be any sign of participation in international contest. The main problem here is $$$.

Rather than a exam,I would have thought an interview with a portfolio would be more suitable for art and film school .
