Unless they somehow decided to export the J-16, which thus far hasn't happened probably because of an agreement with the Russians not to export Flankers, it would have to be the FC-31.

But the FC-31 is at least by my understanding far from ready!

this one i don't understand sir.. please elaborate little more

FC-31 is been testing for years. its relatively a mature platform now. this aircraft can be exported with WS-21 engines if SAC get some serious order ... i mean within few years FC-31 can be ready for exports.

I don't think it is any different from signing contracts for F-35 that will be years before delivery

Canada signed a deal for F-35 in 2010 for delivery in 2016 (which gave plenty of time for the government that signed the deal to lose a snap election and have the deal cancelled), then dragged the feet until 2022 at which planes will be delivered in 2024 at best. Even if the deal didn't get cancelled, those early batches had so many problems that probably the deal would've been delayed anyway.
