Chinese air to air missiles

I guess this is the first production batch of PL-12. One of those never before seen pictures. Not really sure how many are in there. Looks like they are placed in racks of 3 (one on top and 2 on bottom). I'm guessing around 30.

I counted 12 on the top level. That give 36 for me.

The latest versions of the PL-12 are about that range or better.
Well we've heard rumours about PL-12 approaching 100km in range, but I don't think it's ever been confirmed to a good extent I think.

There is the PL-21 or a chinese "Meteor" aam, which looks a bit like a PL-12, but with a ramjet - that version will have a range of at least km... when it comes into service and what development stage it is at isn't known though.

I only see two stacks/levels. If you look at the gray racks, each rack holds 4 missiles. The 1st one just had an empty space.

Three missles were launched from ground and no target drone was mentioned in the report. All the three shoots were successful as the experimentally captured trajectories were almost perfectly overlaid with the computer simulation results.

There were no specifications or other description of the new "Program Controlled Missile" in the report. However its main feature is emphasized clearly as the program controlled ballistic trajectory. It was reported before that the current generation AA missiles are digitized and use high optimized high trajectory. Therefore it is possible that the new missile uses thrust vector propulsion, has no or little aerodynamic control surface, as intended being carried in internal weapon bay.

Anyway, I think the article you were referring to is this one.
It doesn't really say that it's AAM exactly. That's just the most likely case. People have been assuming that this is PL-10, but we need more evidence.

镜头一:使命如山,挑战如山,出征

2009年12月某日上午,导弹院召开某新型号产品外场摸底试验进场动员会。会场气氛紧张而凝重。

院长葛森强调,此次试验意义重大,任务艰巨,时间紧迫,要求很高,困难很多,大家一定要坚定信心,要有誓死拿下项目的决心,确保试验圆满成功。

“我们一定要咬定目标,全力以赴,这是一项必须完成的政治任务,狭路相逢勇者胜,我们只有拼了!”总设计师樊会涛说。

沉重而有力的语气使大家清楚地意识到,一场考验型号线意志和能力的攻坚战即将打响。这一战,关乎着该型号线8个月来的成绩是否经得起考验,关乎着导弹院的发展“命运”是否能牢牢把握,关乎着“合集团之力,夺竞标成功”的目标是否能顺利实现。

当天晚上11时,试验队员们整理行装,顶风冒雪,憋着一股“誓死拿下”的劲儿,踏上了前往西北大漠战斗的征程。

试验队员们不顾两天两夜路途奔波的疲劳,到达试验基地的当天晚上就展开了工作,协调计划、布置任务、考察阵地等。第二天傍晚,运送产品的车辆也到达基地,换班司机早已等候在那里,把连续赶了4天路、已经10多个小时没有吃饭的司机换下了,直接把产品拉到试验场。此时,天已经黑透,气温在零下二十六七摄氏度左右。试验队人员不顾寒冷,抓紧卸车,立即展开设备检查、测试等工作。

镜头二:戈壁沙漠,风云突变

2009年12月某日晚,西北荒漠的夜晚寒冷而宁静。樊会涛组织所有参试人员召开会议,郑重传达了中国航空工业集团公司总经理林左鸣给予试验队的重望——“期待你们的好消息!”

使命如山,挑战如山。“确保节点,一次成功,誓死拿下”,这是试验队员们的口号。试验队进一步部署了工作,对产品和可能出现的问题又进行了全面分析,再次强调了试验规范化、工作程序化、测试表格化的“三化”要求。最后,樊会涛要求试验队员,齐心协力,稳妥可靠,万无一失,认真做好各项试验的准备工作,确保试验圆满成功。

第二天决定打一枚弹。试验队员们异常兴奋,都早早地起床准备进入试验阵地。试验阵地是在一个离基地80公里、深入沙漠2公里处的戈壁沙漠上,除了强烈的阳光、刺骨的寒风和满地的沙石以外,光秃秃的连根草都没有。

为了解决吃饭问题,试验队把基地仅有的9个暖水瓶全买了,但由于质量问题,最后只剩6个。灌上开水带着上路,午餐就是开水泡面。由于人多水少,吃饭得分批进行。在零下二十六七摄氏度的戈壁上,开水倒出来就已经变成了温水,面肯定泡不开,只是连汤带水地填饱肚子而已。有些队员弄个三合板架在车座位上吃,有些放在车门上吃,有些干脆顶着寒风在外面吃。

下午所有准备工作完毕,进入正式发射程序。

基地突然传来“停”的口令,原因是基地那边起风了。

大漠的气候啊,前一分钟还是晴朗又宁静的天空,突然就狂风四起,裹卷着沙石肆虐袭击。大家来不及躲避风沙,赶紧收产品、盖设备。

试验取消。

镜头三:天时地利,信心倍增

2009年12月某日,天气阴沉,雪花飘落,荒芜的沙漠变成了白雪皑皑一望无际的“南极”。试验基地一片静穆,似乎也更加凝重。试验队接到指令要在今天打第一枚弹,这样的天气让试验队员的心情忐忑不安——这天气能打吗?

就在人们整装待命、焦急不安时,试验队接到指令——80公里外的阵地那边天气有望好转,做好试验进场准备。

下午2时进场了,车开到离基地50公里处,地上的雪已经少了;开到60公里处,天明显开始亮了;继续前行,已经隐约看到太阳的光芒了。戈壁的天气就是这样跟他们开着玩笑,大家欣喜地加紧往前赶。

到了阵地,看到天上的云一点点地散开着,天空一点点地透明着,大家的心情也一点点地舒畅着,有试验队员情不自禁兴奋地说:“看到了吗?这是老天专门为我们做试验而开的一个大天窗啊!”

大家立刻进入状态,产品准备、记录、检查、测试、联试、进入发射程序……

“10、9、8、7、6、5、4、3、2、1,发射!”

刹那间,随着一声穿越时空的巨响,导弹似脱缰的野马腾空而出,带出一道壮观的银色火焰,向着蔚蓝的大漠长空直刺而去……

关键的第一枚试验打成功,这给试验队员们增添了无比的信心。晚饭是牛肉面,吃了一碗又一碗,就是没觉得饱,大家笑着说,也不知是中午吃得少太饿了,还是今天心情过于兴奋,使身体的饥饱神经变得迟钝了。

镜头四:一鼓作气,勇夺全胜

2009年12月某日,再次传来喜讯——第二枚弹又打成功啦!樊会涛给林左鸣总经理发了条短信,报告了两枚弹的试验结果。林左鸣总经理给樊会涛回复了:热烈祝贺!希望你们一鼓作气,勇夺全胜!

“一鼓作气,勇夺全胜!”立刻在试验队员们的手机里传开,成为鼓舞试验队员们顽强战斗的巨大动力。

试验队在荒漠的戈壁上迎来了2010年新年。虽然那里冰天雪地,飞沙走石,但队员们却个个精神饱满,士气昂扬。特别是元旦那天,林左鸣总经理与试验队员们进行了视频交流。他亲切地向大家问候:“今天是元旦,新年第一天,我向战斗在西北基地坚持搞试验的队员们表示衷心地感谢!祝你们新年快乐!”并鼓励试验队员们:“你们要再接再厉,把各项试验做好,一定要有誓死拿下这个项目的勇气和决心!”千里之外的试验队员们感到了感到了无比的温暖和巨大的鼓舞。

元旦假期他们整整忙了三天,分组对前两枚已打产品试验数据和后两枚未打产品状况进行认真分析,晚上就开始做试验前的所有准备工作。

2010年1月某日,打了第三枚弹。又获成功!标志着此次试验任务圆满完成!

如果说第一枚弹的成功让他们松了口气,第二枚弹的成功又增强他们的信心,那么第三枚弹的成功,用他们自己的话说就是,打出了他们的底气。

镜头五:撤离,新的战斗又开始了

2010年1月某日,试验队员开始收拾行李准备撤场了,大家知道,这一个“撤”字,意味着即将进入下一个“忙”字。正如型号总师廖志忠说的:“这次试验只是高考前的预考,真正的大考还在后面。我们不仅是为了程控弹的试验而试验,而是瞄准了提高部队战斗力这个最终目标。为了最终目标,我们还要做好苦战的准备。”

是的,该型号线连续加班,奋力拼搏,特别是临进外场那一周,白天黑夜连轴转,每天都工作到夜里两三时才回家,有些科研人员很疲惫,哪怕在稍稍等待的一点时间里都会打个盹儿,可是让他们撤离现场,他们却坚持不肯。

试验队员们在返回的路上,有些人就已经从电话里接到新的任务,回到研究院的当天晚上,他们就立即投入到了工作中,开始了新的战斗。

There was a cited link to a PLA daily which stated the PL-12's effective range to be in excess of 100km, but some vandal replaced it with a link to a Dr. Fisher article that had nothing to do with it.

More technical details of SD-10A AAM revealed

At the 2009 Paris Air Show, AVIC revealed more technical details of SD-10A active radar guided AAM. A designer of this AAM claims that SD-10A is a 4th generation air-to-air missile and has been fitted on the PLA Air Force’s J8F and J10A fighters.

From what I have been reading the latest production run of missiles have been derived from Israeli technology (specifically the python). Is the PLAAF working on any new medium range AAM similar to the Derby/Sparrow system?
Also do you believe that the guidance system will be copy of these systems or a domestic improvement based on existing PLAAF technology?

Sounds like the same kind of baseless drivel we have been seeing for years from western sources.
