fingers crossed for new side skirts

Rigid side skirts impede on mobility by churning up mud and are a pain in the ass to clean; they offer zero advantages in peacetime. Until China needs to send these tanks into battle, the PLA will likely dispense with side skirts.

I feel hull protection is neglected compared to the turret. Hoping a new chassis means for steel/composite skirts. It's worrying why they haven't tested skirts of different composites instead of sticking to the same dust rubber covers. Even exported 59G's sides are better defended. Better side protection is crucial to protect carousel, especially larger hulls of 99 series.

I understand Type 96 is valued for its light weight and maneuverability but right skirts will go a long way, without over-hindering speed.
