300 million for 6 Y-8 is 37.5 million a piece, that is not expensive at all, compare to 65 million a piece for C-130.

hmm, I think you mean 8? 37.5 million is not a lot compared to American product, but Y-8 is also at quite a disadvantage in performance compared to C-130. Just think about how much China originally signed IL-76 deal for, 37.5 million per Y-8 is not cheap.

Yeah you are right, I meant 8. But I was not aware there is that much difference between Y-8 and C-130. They both have almost identical payload and flight characteristic.

And if safety standard is similar, I see Y-8 is a good deal.

IL-76 is a whole new different class than Y-8 and C-130. I remember for the 2nd batch of Chinese purchase, the Russian broke the contract and asked for a large increase in price, so that might not be as competitive anymore.

there is an entry on my blog comparing Y-9 to C-130. You can take a look at it. My point is that IL-76 is much larger than Y-8, but the original deal came about to be about $20 million each. Even the non discounted price was still $50 million. Consider how much larger IL-76 is over Y-8, you can see $37.5 million is quite a bit.

What year was this 50 million dollar deal? Also would it be possible that it is a lot cheaper to operate and maintain the Y-8 than Il-76?

edit...

Ok, I found it out, it was 1.5 billion signed in 2005 for 38 planes, which is 40 million a piece, in 2007, 2 years later Russia want to increase it to 1.9 which makes it 50 million a piece.

So who knows now in 2012, 5 years later what would the price by now. Maybe Venezuela even seek to purchase IL-76 from Russia but the sticker price was too high?

Huitong also mentioned that China cancelled the 2005 deal and instead went for some refurbished IL76's which are already in service.
