He did not say the domestic engine would be WS-18, it could very well be WS-20. IMO he was more likely referring to the WS-20, as you can't really 'see' the WS-18 when compared to the original D-30.

There is no reason to believe that the Y-20 must use WS-18 first before turning to WS-20, especially considering the number of D-30 China ordered.

Would WS-18 be considered an "indigenous" engine though? Reading the statement, I think it makes far more sense that it would be referring to WS-20.

And with WS-18 -- would we even know if Y-20s were equipped with WS-18 rather than D-30s? Would they make a fuss about it, and would we even be able to see it?

I think during the service introduction it was already confirmed that they all use imported engines.

When was this? And were they referring to "all" as in all aircraft from that point onwards? Because that would be a rather interesting statement to make...

If not (meaning DK-30 currently), then the "domestic engine" can be either WS-18 or WS-20. If Tang meant WS-20 then it is not slower than expected.

WS-18 is considered to be domestic. They did real development work and testing to have it ready for production. I did expect the first production Y-20 to use WS-18, because it already received design certification.

I definitely can't tell between WS-18 vs D-30. Considering WS-9 is considered domestic engine. I don't see why WS-18 would not be.
