I looked at some numbers:
The maximum payload as a percentage of maximum take off weight is about 30% for Y-20, C-17 and An-70, less than that for the older Il-76 and the new A-400M and Kawasaki C-2, while the range with that load is more than 4000 km for all but the A-400M.
Y-20 needs the next engines to achieve that of course. The A-400M looks like a dubious buy.

For range less big also.
About Y-20 the main interesting for Chinese AF with a 66 t payload can carry a Type 99 a heavy MBT as C-17, Il-76 and all others cargos on the pic can 't and Type 96 is clearly less well protected aumpteenth variant of the T-72 in fact...
But logicaly Y-20 have for main mission carry troops of 15th Airborne Corps.

A400 is a light armour mover like IFV etc

If China could not buy heavy transports, making its own is more important than anything else.
