While I understand that in general the Epoch Times is not a reliable source of information on the Chinese military, I am curious about its passing statement in the article that a Y-8 gunship (AC-130 equivalent) exists. Anyone have more info on the validity of this claim?

It is invalid.

Apologies if these questions have been asked/answered before; am posting from phone atm:

1. What has happened with PLAAF order for 30 Il-76s? Is this in progress, completed, cancelled?

2. Is there any word on a successor to Y-7 light tactical transport?

I think it is safe to say the Epoch Times won't be the first to know if a Y-8 gunship exists. The rumor would have surfaced already in netizen sites and blogs.

Does it mean we'll see regular patrols of GX-8s over the East China Sea and near Japan's coasts?

Japan's Ministry of Defense has released a photo of a new type of Chinese intelligence-gathering aircraft that its fighters intercepted in international airspace over the East China Sea on 3 October.

Known as the GX-8 (GaoXin, literally High New, the name assigned to China's Y-8/Y-9 special missions aircraft), the aircraft is based on the Shaanxi Y-9 transport.

The GX-8 is believed to be an electronic intelligence (ELINT) gathering platform, mounting four distinctive elongated antennas on its fuselage. It also carries a prominent nose radar and SATCOM dome. At least three GX-8s are known to be in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) North Sea Fleet's 2nd Air Division.

While the 3 October interception by Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighters is the first external proof of this variant's existence, low-resolution photos of the GX-8 were posted online in late 2011. The type is believed to have begun flight tests in early 2011, while the first public sighting of it in service with the PLAN occurred in April this year.

Satellite imagery shows that various GaoXin special mission aircraft also frequently deploy to the East Sea Fleet's airbase at Ningbo-Zhuangqiao in Zhejiang Province, whence they undertake regular flights over the East China Sea. This aircraft was likely operating from that base when it was intercepted by the JASDF.

China currently operates at least eight different GaoXin special mission variants with the PLAN and the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). Based either on the Y-9 or the older Y-8C airframes, they serve in a wide variety of roles ranging from psychological warfare to airborne tactical command posts.

Russian-Chinese heavy helicopter will have take-off weight of 38 tons - Rogozin

Russia and China have reached an agreement in principle on a joint project to create a heavy transport helicopter, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

"For heavy helicopters moving normally. Treaty to the helicopter on 38 tons," - said to "Interfax-AVN" Rogozin.

According to him, it was decided that "Russia's contribution to the project will be material, our technical capabilities."

Previously CEO of the holding company "Helicopters of Russia" Alexander Mikheyev said "Interfax-AVN" that technical configuration of the Russian-Chinese heavy helicopter will be determined before the end of the year.

"Hopefully, this year we define the technical configuration of the helicopter and the status of the project," - said A.Miheev.

According to him, the Russian-Chinese heavy helicopter is planned to create on the basis of the technological platform of the heaviest in the world of the Mi-26, produced by "Rostvertol" (part of the holding company "Helicopters of Russia").

He noted that the new car will not be analogue or further development of Russian heavy Mi-26 helicopter. "This helicopter will be developed specifically for the Chinese market, to perform the missions that are formulated by various ministries and agencies in China. Primarily the Ministry of Emergency Situations," - said A.Miheev.

Interesting, that will make this helicopter in the same class as the new Ch-53K.

This deal is only really useful if they share the technology and production capability for this new helicopter.

Well the CH-53 variants are very powerful helicopters they can lift 155mm howitzers with the crew and ammunition over a good distance

If China wants to shift heavy artillery like a 155mm howitzer by air they will have to build a more powerful helo to do it

So I think there is certainly scope and a requirement for such a helo

Even better would be if such a helicopter could also fit into the Y-20 Transport

China's future air mobility needs to be planed carefully with future missions in mind
