Re: China's transport plane capacities

Thats good to hear for the PLA, it'll be good if the PLAAF can get the Y-9 into their fleet before 2010 in large numbers to replace the older Y-8. And China's IL-76 equivalent would be good to see to. Wonder if PLAAF has any projects equivalent to the C-17???

This should answer your question. C-17 Globemaster III

I don't think Y-9 will replace Y-8 that quickly, but China might be able to complete the Y-9 development before 2010.

Actually Y8 is not so old. Most of the Y8 in PLA service were built no earlier than mid 90s. May be the design is old, but the planes are not. After all, PLA is not a modern military force yet, so many old designs will still have quite some service life.

Re: China's transport plane capacities

more on this line of news from paris airshow.
BOMBARDIER, the world's third-largest aircraft maker, has signed an agreement
with China's biggest plane producer to cooperate in developing mid-sized
regional jets, the two companies said in Paris.
Under the deal, the Canadian-based manufacturer will invest US$100 million in
the development of China Aviation Industry Corp I's ARJ21-900 planes. AVIC I,
in return, agreed to pump US$400 million into Bombardier's C-Series planes,
should the Canadian firm decide to continue developing them.
The sharing of common parts will bring about mutually beneficial cost
reductions and increased production efficiencies for the aircraft programs,
officials said at a joint press conference at the Paris Air Show on Monday.
``With the implementation of this long-term strategic cooperation, we will be
able to move forward more effectively with our vision to develop the most
competitive commercial airplanes,'' said Lin Zuoming, president of AVIC I.
The ARJ21-900, which the state-owned AVIC I plans to begin developing this
year, is a larger variant of the ARJ21-700. It will seat five passengers in a
row and carry 98 to 105 passengers over a distance of 2,225 kilometers. It is
expected to be in service by 2011.
The C-Series program was put on hold by Bombardier last year after a poor
response from airlines. The plane manufacturer now says it will decide by 2008
whether to proceed with the program.
Pierre Beaudoin, president of Bombardier, said the agreement allows the
``exchange of technical expertise and the expansion of our market potential,
both in the higher end of the regional aircraft market and lower end of the
mainline market.''
I think China probably gets more technical experience out of this, but obviously bombardier is going more for the market share.
and also a little more on China bidding for airbus plants, not sure what kind of technology they can buy from this.
June 19 (Bloomberg) -- China Aviation Industry Corp., known
as Avic I, the largest Chinese planemaker, is bidding to invest
in or buy all six Airbus SAS plants, including the Filton
location near Bristol, the Guardian reported, citing the
company's president.
``If we succeed in buying or partnering these six
facilities, we will develop them and be a more competitive
supplier to Airbus,'' Lin Zuo Ming told the Guardian.
Airbus is auctioning off the plants, located in England,
France and Germany, under plans to save more than 2 billion euros
($2.7 billion) a year, the Guardian said.

Certainly not a bad way to invest some of the fx reservers rather than spending all to buy US treasuries.

chances are that they won't get much out of this, but they certainly have a lot to gain, another article on this.
SHANGHAI (Thomson Financial) - State-run Chinese aircraft manufacturer AVIC
I is considering investing in some of Airbus' European plants, the China
Business News reported, citing a senior company official.
"If a Chinese aerospace company could successfully buy or take a stake in
(Airbus plants), it would contribute hugely to the development of our industry,"
AVIC I general manager Lin Zuoming was quoted as saying at the Paris air show.
"China would become a very competitive supplier," he continued.
AVIC I, more formally known as China Aviation Industry Corp One, was not
immediately available to confirm the report.
However, a source close to the matter attending the Paris air show told
Agence France-Presse the chances of a Chinese firm buying an Airbus base
were extremely thin.
Under its Power8 restructuring plan, announced at the end of February,
Airbus has said it aims to sell its German plants in Laupheim and Varel, as well
as its facility in Saint Nazaire, France to investors.
The aircraft manufacturer is also looking for investors for its core
production plants in Meaulte, France; Nordenham, Germany; and Filton in the UK,
he added.
French aeronautical equipment supplier Latecoere has already confirmed it
has made a bid for Meaulte and Saint Nazaire, while Stork NV, Zodiac and
US-based Spirit Aerosystems have also been cited as candidates in the press.
In early May, French daily La Tribune reported that Airbus was to start
negotiations on the sale of the three plants in mid-May, and hoped to sign
agreements with the chosen buyers by the end of June or early July.
Airbus, meanwhile, has invested heavily in China and is now assembling a
plant for its A320 jets near Beijing.

Does anyone know why is that so?

Re: China's transport plane capacities

continuation of the il-76 saga, it's definite, the Russians are offering China MF variant with PS-90A engine. Let's see how it goes from here.
ARIS. June 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Rosoboronexport has offered China a
new contract on the delivery of an updated version of the Ilyushin Il-76
MF military cargo planes in place of an earlier contract on deliveries
of Il-76 MD transports.
"A big problem has occurred in the fulfillment of the Chinese
order. We have told China that our Uzbek partners are, unfortunately,
unable to meet their commitments, primarily their pricing commitments,"
Rosoboronexport General Director Sergei Chemezov told Interfax-AVN.
The Tashkent aviation plant is manufacturing the Il-76 MD and the
Il-78. Rosoboronexport doubts that the plant can build the amount of
planes promised.
"That is why, we have offered Chinese partners to build planes of a
totally new modification with new engines. That would be a new contract
and a new price," Chemezov said.
The leasing of the Russian Defense Ministry's Il-76 planes is
possible while the new planes are being built, he said.
"The offer has been made, and we are waiting for a reply from our
Chinese partners," he said.
An agreement on the delivery of 34 Il-76 MD military cargo planes
and four Il-78 tanker planes was signed in September 2005. Experts
estimate the deal at approximately $1.5 billion.
