I think it is safe to say the Epoch Times won't be the first to know if a Y-8 gunship exists. The rumor would have surfaced already in netizen sites and blogs.
Aw... man! Got me excited for a while... I really thought that China had come up with a Y-8 gunship.

Russian-Chinese heavy helicopter will have take-off weight of 38 tons - Rogozin
Russia and China have reached an agreement in principle on a joint project to create a heavy transport helicopter, said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.
"For heavy helicopters moving normally. Treaty to the helicopter on 38 tons," - said to "Interfax-AVN" Rogozin.

Well the CH-53 variants are very powerful helicopters they can lift 155mm howitzers with the crew and ammunition over a good distance
If China wants to shift heavy artillery like a 155mm howitzer by air they will have to build a more powerful helo to do it
So I think there is certainly scope and a requirement for such a helo
Even better would be if such a helicopter could also fit into the Y-20 Transport
China's future air mobility needs to be planed carefully with future missions in mind
