I'm a little late to the party, but there seemed to be a hole in the parachute of Shenzhou 16 and Shenzhou 18.

I understand it's typically not a problem, however it could make the landing a bit harder. Does anyone know why this happened and how it can be prevented in the future?

"Holes" in parachutes are normal. Numerous designs use them, especially round or jellyfish shaped ones.

A quick search on Wikipedia would have saved that Twitter blogger from asking such stupid question.

In short, parachutes are designed with holes to provide directional stability. They make landing safer.

This is knowledge that you should have learnt from middle school physics and experiment. I am shocked that you asked this kind of question in this forum.

For anyone interested. CZ-12 is the outcome of Lunar rocket proposal from 8th academy of CASC, a competing proposal to CZ-10 in 921 program.

Personally I don't expect CZ-12 to be extensively used since it is not going to be used in high payload demanding (expendable mode) missions. In commercial market CZ-12A would be the one to stay.
