In just five years, China has deployed more than 260 imaging satellites and about 50 navigation satellites, he added. “Their space capabilities are still not quite as good as ours, but they are really, really good. And so we have to assume that they are a peer competitor in that regard.”Are they better than us? Will they win? Are we in parity? I can’t say that,” Thompson added. “All I can say is that they are a serious challenge. They are a serious threat. Their capabilities are close to ours.

A slide from an online talk about space robotics and the manufacturing of robots in space (面向在轨制造的空间机器人及机构技术研究). Am I translating this right? The talk was given by Xu Zhenbang (徐振邦) of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics.

Does anyone have a link to the video or more presentation slides?

Never mind, I found the lecture. It's from a series of seven lectures on space robotics and automation.

@taxiya, you might find the lectures very interesting, if you haven't already come across them.

Some basic technologies that will be used to manufacture and assemble the upcoming large aperture space telescope that is currently in formal engineering stage. The optical mirrors of the telescope are to be manufactured in space and assembled using robots.

The telescope is made up of hundreds of mirror elements are use to form a single, very large aperture. The mirrors are assembled using robots.
