China to launch space station by 2023
By Clive Simpson
Beijing
China expects to complete its first orbiting space station within a decade.
The station, in low-Earth orbit, will be able to support six crew on short-term missions and three for long-term stays.
Its design consists of three capsules - a core module attached to two laboratories - with a cargo vessel to transport supplies.
The 2023 launch target was revealed at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Beijing.
According to the China Manned Space Agency, the space station will cover an area of 60 sq m.
Its core module (18.1m long) will weigh 20 to 22 metric tonnes and will be attached to two self-contained labs.
Test mission
Once operational, astronauts would be able to make long-term missions in orbit and conduct technical tests and science experiments, said Wang Zhaoyao, the director of the space agency.
But before all this, China must first test technologies in renewable life support and in-orbit refuelling.
Perfecting these would be essential for the planned station, said Xu Dazhe, general manager of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp.
To carry out the tests, China will launch the Tiangong-2 space laboratory in around two years.
One cargo "shuttle" and several manned spaceships would be launched to dock with the Tiangong-2 at different times, Mr Xu revealed.
China became the third country to independently launch a human into space in 2003 and has been rapidly expanding its space programme ever since.
In June last year, it successfully carried out its first manual space docking, another essential step in building a space station.
Three astronauts - Liu Yang, Jing Haipeng and Liu Wang - piloted Shenzhou-9 to link up with the Tiangong-1 spacelab.
China's first female astronauts - Liu Yang and Wang Yaping - appeared together at the IAC meeting.
Liu Yang said the nation was willing to accept foreign astronauts for future missions.
The annual IAC event has about 3,600 space scientists and business people attending, representing some 74 countries from across the world.

Sorry, but this station will be smaller and less international than ISS. There wont be any NASA austronauts in this station. And probably foreign austronauts will be there for mostly political goodwill ( and most probably from countries like pakistan, Venezuela, cuba, etc).

In fact, Pakistan has already express interest to go to the chinese station (AFAIK its the first country to do so)

Not neccessary, Germany has a long of scientific test wanted carry out beyond 2020 onboard ISS but the service life of ISS is questionable beyond 2020 since the financial status of many western countries is very bad.

In fact, Europe Space Agency has contacted Chinese side for use of Chinese space station for future.

I happen to agree with kroko, I was making a joke with the Babylon five reference. The space station described is more of a Skylab type. A small single unit compared to iss. Iss by contrast may serve longer NASA is looking at commercial space projects and is said to be working with bigilo space to possibly update parts of the structure

China Testing New Space Weapons
China conducts satellite capture in space as part of Star Wars military program

China last week conducted a test of a maneuvering satellite that captured another satellite in space during what Pentagon officials say was a significant step forward for Beijing’s space warfare program.

The satellite capture took place last week and involved one of three small satellites fitted with a mechanical arm that were launched July 20 as part of a covert anti-satellite weapons development program, said U.S. officials familiar with reports of the test.

One official described the satellite-grabbing spacecraft as a “mobile satellite launch vehicle.”

A Pentagon spokeswoman declined to comment on the specifics of the test. But Cynthia O. Smith, the spokeswoman, confirmed that the satellites, designated Payloads A, B, and C, have maneuvered in space since their launch.

“The United States Strategic Command’s Joint Functional Combatant Command for Space (JFCC-Space), consistent with its routine operations to maintain track of objects in space, has monitored these satellites since their launch and has noticed the relative motions of these satellites amongst each other and with respect to other space objects,” she said............................................................
