I thought space ops were the responsibility of PLASSF?
Yes, I was wrong. One role of many of Support Force is actually the same as US space force.
Someone who admits they are wrong online, gets an upvote.

PLASSF
PLA Rocket Force is only responsible for land based ballistic missiles.
战略支援部队(PLA Strategic Support Corps) is responsible to support all other 4 branches with strategic data security, reconnaissance, communication, electrical warfare and psychological warfare. The reconnaissance and communication parts certainly includes operation of satellites that makes it a kind of space force.
I would prefer to translate 战略支援部队 to Strategic Support Corps instead of Strategic Support Force for the following reasons:
- Follow the established tradition of PLA translation. The current Rocket Force was elevated from "2nd Artillery Corps" which in Chinese was "第二炮兵部队". This means,
- In PLA definitions 部队 and 军 are two distinct categories. Only 军 is on the same level as Branch in other countries.
- Another reason is that according to PLA daily, 战略支援部队 are made up of units working within each 4 branches. This means that it is not a vertical structure like other branches, but a mix of bother vertical and horizontal structure. So it is better to reflect this unique feature in its name.
