A very one-sided documentary by Channel News Asia of Singapore on the South China Sea issue:
I'm usually okay with CNA, but this is just low by their standards. Its sensationalist, its fear mongering of China, and its heavily one-sided. In particular, they almost exclusively covered 2 belligerent opponents to China in the SCS: The Philippines, and Vietnam.
Hi
@ansy1968, do you know any information of these two people in The Philippines:
1) Gloria Ramos, Vice President of Oceania
2) Prof. Jay Batongbacal, Director, Institute of Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, University of the Philippines.
Especially Prof Jay. That guy is very belligerent and is very critical of President Duterte.
I don't blame the fishermen in Vietnam and PH for hating China, they are all misinformed. The real culprits are their politicians, elites and their government for creating this false narrative of 'evil China'. I would like to call out this Prof Jay. He has been given a lot of air time in the documentary. This fool considers President Duterte China policy a failure, and advocates a more confrontational policy against China. He says that China don't respect Duterte, because he is 'soft'. China respects Indonesia because Jokowi was 'tough' on China. I call that nonsense. China respects Indonesia more because it has much less confrontations with Indonesia vs PH and Vietnam. Despite Duterte being friendlier to China, serious confrontations still occur between the 2 countries. But did Aquino's 'tough' policy on China worked? Hell no! His policy to confront China, and bring the SCS dispute to the Court of Arbitration provoked China to build up those islands in the SCS! The tougher PH is on China, the tougher China will be to the PH.
Zhang Hongzhou, Research Fellow from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies rightly mentioned that the root cause of this fishing wars is this:
China offered joint development with all SCS claimants. But almost all of them are not willing to talk about it without discussions about sovereignty.
This is zero sum mentality.
China's '9-dash line' (was 11-dash line) was drawn when the ROC was still in power in China in 1947. This is not a CPC thing, its Chinese historical territorial claim. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and others have not existed at that time. Could they have some historical claim before the age of European colonialism? Maybe, but it is up to these SEA countries to prove it. Otherwise, just sit down and negotiate a win-win deal with China. Bring in the UNCLOS and US Navy will only make China tighten its grip on the SCS. Its counter productive, its short-sighted, and its foolish.
