I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but what are the economics of land reclamation for civilian use? Land reclamation is very expensive, but take Singapore for example. The Marina Bay Sands resort was built on reclaimed land. So entertainment resorts have been built on wholly reclaimed land before. Can an SCS island be adjoined with more reclaimed land for an entertainment resort? Think the Atlantis Hotel in Bahamas. You would need an airport so you could use one of the military airports there. The geopolitical value in terms of further staking China's claim to the region with an Atlantis there needs to be considered too.

I assume land reclamation would be even more expensive in SCS though with the greater water depths.

Wouldnt the reclaimed land be amongst the first land lost to global warming/rising tides.In NZ Insrance companies are suggesting homes in NZ by the beach will become prohibitively uninsurable.

Well the fact that there is reclamation already going on for military installations shows that PLA is prepared for rising tides in SCS. Otherwise they won't be building airports and other military installations if they're going to disappear to rising tides.

well I hope rising tides between China and USA will lead to no action on the SCS front.......
I know I know, it is a dream at best.

Just like those "Ghost Cities" that are all filling up?

Just like that "Hard-Landing" and debt implosion and housing bubble collapse?

China needs to be careful with this guy, I have a suspicion that he is the latest CIA asset assigned to the Philippines to promote and inflame anti-Chinese sentiments in the country. Also, since elections will be held next year, there is a big potential that Washington will interfere to support their candidate and install another Sinophobic president like the one before Duterte.

He works for CSIS, so his job is to protect US interest there.

I am actually more worried about the ANC and interviewer.

What a brainfart interview. Why would Philippines-based ANC be asking an American outsider about the negotiations relating to code-of-conduct in SCS. He should be interviewing his own government.

I did not even be bothered with the rest of the video as it is too much brainfart on the part of the interviewer and ANC. He cannot be bothered to interview his own government officials. He seems to think interviewing a friendly American from Washington DC lends legitimacy to the leading questions. It is as if he wants this American to tell his Filipinos viewers what to think about issues relating to Philippines national interest.

Sad to see really.
